Charming Hungarian town to host new UN research institute

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has asked the culture and foreign ministries to start preparations to accommodate a new UN research institute in Kőszeg, in western Hungary, the ministry of culture and innovation told MTI on Tuesday.

The new institute will serve as a central European research centre to focus on “peace, security, transformative technologies as well as socio-economic trends impacting the future,” the ministry said, adding that the facility would be hosted by Institute of Advanced Studies Kőszeg.

In its statement, the ministry quoted Balázs Hankó, the minister of culture and innovation, as saying that the new institute would “reinforce Hungary’s international position in science and promote development of the region; it will not just be a new research centre, but a new area for Hungarian researchers and students to appear in the global forefront, while the local community and the national economy could benefit.”
