Belgium’s airports halt operations due to strike, Budapest flights might also be affected

Charleroi Airport in Belgium, which also serves budget flights to and from Budapest, will neither operate departures nor receive arrivals on Tuesday due to a nationwide strike affecting the whole country. No passenger flights will depart from Brussels’ Zaventem International Airport either, The Brussels Times reported on Friday.

According to the report, several trade unions have called on workers to join the strike, organised in opposition to the federal government’s planned reforms. Union demands include keeping overtime payments with bonus rates, maintaining easier access to early retirement schemes, ensuring fair compensation for night work, and guaranteeing higher pensions.

The unions have announced a protest march for 14 October, starting from Brussels’ North railway station and heading to Midi station. The news outlet also noted that, alongside the complete shutdown or severe disruption of traffic at international airports, interruptions are expected to impact national bus services, Brussels’ public transport, and even waste collection.

Train services provided by Belgium’s national railway company, SNCB, will not be affected by the strike. Eurostar high-speed trains linking Brussels with Paris, London, and Amsterdam are also expected to run according to schedule on the day of the strike.
