The renovation of one of Budapest’s busiest traffic hubs, the Flórián Square overpass, is entering its next stage.

According to the Budapest Transport Centre (BKK), the technical inspection and handover of the southern bridge section are expected to begin on 31 October, followed by a temporary opening for traffic before winter sets in. Once completed, vehicles will once again be able to travel from Szentendrei Road towards Pest on the renewed structure.

With the reopening of the southern bridge, work will immediately move to the second phase — the renovation of the northern bridge. During this period, temporary bus lanes will remain in place to ensure reliable public transport connections, particularly for passengers heading towards the H5 suburban railway and Árpád Bridge.

Huge project, according to Budapest Transport Centre

BKK described the Flórián Square overpass reconstruction as one of Budapest’s most complex road renewal projects, significantly impacting traffic in the area. The southern bridge’s resurfacing began on 16 October, including asphalt works, installation of new drainage systems, and fitting of steel safety railings.

The technical inspection process will involve BKK experts, engineers, and maintenance operators, who will thoroughly review the site and request any necessary final adjustments before reopening.

To ease congestion and encourage sustainable travel, BKK urges motorists to use public transport where possible and to avoid Flórián Square by taking alternative routes. The city continues to enhance bus and tram services during the works:

  • Tram lines 1 and 1A will operate more frequently during peak hours.
  • Bus routes 34 and 106 will also run more often.
  • Temporary bus lanes are in effect from Kaszásdűlő to Bogdáni Road, and from Czetz János Square to Záhony Street, ensuring smoother travel for vehicles arriving from North Buda.
  • Additional bus lanes have been introduced along Árpád Bridge to improve traffic flow towards Buda and Margaret Island.

According to BKK’s preliminary data, despite the ongoing works, overall congestion in the district has not increased, and travel times towards the city centre have remained stable. Interestingly, traffic pressure has shifted to the outer sections of Szentendrei Road, reducing noise and emissions in the more densely populated inner parts of Óbuda — improving air quality and living conditions for tens of thousands of residents.

BKK also highlighted that buses are now faster and more punctual than before, with noticeably fewer delays thanks to the dedicated bus lanes.

The company plans to launch a comprehensive public information campaign ahead of the northern bridge renovation. Details on closures, diversions, and project updates are available on the continuously updated website florianter.hu, while BKK Info provides daily news and travel information.
