Hungary’s foreign minister rejects Clinton remarks over Hungary’s ‘Putinisation’ – VIDEO

Budapest, May 17 (MTI) – Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó rejected comments by former US president Bill Clinton who said over the weekend that countries like Hungary have grown tired of democracy and are building an authoritarian regime, much like that of Russia’s Vladimir Putin.

“No one, not even Clinton can offend Hungarians” who fought for their freedom, with tens of thousands sacrificing their lives, Szijjártó told MTI in a statement on Tuesday. Degrading the freedom fight of Hungarians in this way is unacceptable, Szijjártó said, adding that Clinton knows very well that Hungarians decided in democratic elections about the future of their country.

“Clinton may not like the decision of the Hungarian people, but that is no reason to insult them,” he said.

Online index.hu reported on Monday that in a campaign event for his wife at the College of New Jersey last Friday Clinton referred to Hungary and Poland as “two countries that would not be free but for the United States and the long Cold War”. Clinton added that now Hungarians decided democracy was “too much trouble” and want a Putin-style leadership.
