Hungarian woman arrested after assaulting police officer at Vienna’s main railway station

A 30-year-old Hungarian woman has been arrested in Vienna after allegedly attempting to steal a jacket and then assaulting police officers who intervened at the city’s main railway station, according to Austrian police reports.
The incident took place on the morning of 24 December at Vienna Hauptbahnhof, one of the busiest transport hubs in the Austrian capital. Police officers on duty at the station reportedly stopped the woman on suspicion of shoplifting from a clothing store located within the station complex.

According to an official statement released by the Vienna Police, officers approached the woman at around 10:15 AM after staff raised concerns that she was trying to leave the shop without paying for a jacket. While the situation initially appeared to be a routine check, events quickly escalated during the subsequent police procedure, Telex writes.
Authorities said the woman became aggressive after being stopped and turned on the officers. During the altercation, she allegedly struck one of the uniformed policemen several times in the face with an open hand. Following the assault, officers detained and arrested her at the scene.
Despite the attack, the injured officer did not require medical treatment and was able to continue his duties after the incident, police confirmed. No further injuries were reported.
The woman now faces multiple charges under Austrian law, including suspected theft and assaulting a police officer during an official procedure. Investigations into the case are ongoing, and authorities have not released further details about potential legal consequences or whether the suspect remains in custody.
Incidents involving violence against police officers are treated seriously in Austria, particularly in public transport hubs during busy periods such as the Christmas holidays.
