Hungarian tourist stranded in the High Tatras: rescue helicopter deployed

A rescue helicopter was dispatched to extract a Hungarian tourist from the High Tatras.

According to Blikk, a Hungarian tabloid, Polish visitors heard the tourist’s cries for help. The incident occurred in the Mengusovská dolina (Mengusfalvi Valley) in the High Tatras, and the onlookers immediately alerted the Mountain Rescue Service (HZS).

The events unfolded on Saturday near Lake Nagy Békaš. The 21-year-old Hungarian man had reached a cliff off the marked trail, in a section that is closed during winter. Without proper hiking equipment, he was unable to continue safely through the challenging terrain.

An earlier passer-by attempted to assist him but was unable to carry out a rescue due to the difficult conditions.

The HZS subsequently deployed a rescue helicopter, which transported the Hungarian tourist to Ótátrafüred (Starý Smokovec). Fortunately, the traveller did not sustain any serious injuries.
