As a final “gift” of 2025 huge locusts have settled in Hungary

The females can even be 7 centimetres long for this locust species, which rightly arouses fear in those who have already encountered them. Moreover, the expert says they have already settled here with us.

Horror locusts in Hungary

According to the Bible, the Jews languished in captivity under the Egyptian pharaohs until Moses, with God’s help, freed them and led his people to the land of Canaan. However, to break the pharaoh, God sent ten plagues upon the Egyptians. Among these was the eighth, a huge locust swarm, during which the insects devoured the remaining crops everywhere.

The Egyptian locust, also called the horror locust, stands out in size among the approximately 60-70 locust species living in Hungary. According to Puskás Gellért, a member of the Hungarian Entomological Society, this locust species is otherwise not as dangerous as the migratory locust, yet it is also an invasive species.

No need to defend against them yet

Domestic social media has already reported several specimens, with people generally marvelling at their size. The female specimens can indeed reach up to 7 centimetres in length, while the males grow to 4-5.5 centimetres. Their base colour is greyish, with dark patterning. The species has presumably not only appeared in our country but also settled, at least there are already data on larval development. According to the entomologist, the locusts do not concentrate only on cities at all; they also occur in the wild nature.

The expert added that although the press refers to them as horror locusts, there is no need to defend against them for the time being. These locusts do not migrate and do not destroy as many plants as migratory locusts. “It can cause smaller damages, since it is herbivorous, so it stays on bushes and trees, it can nibble vegetables and ornamental plants, but no serious damage is expected,” the entomologist told Infórádió.
