Heavy snowfall continues: second-degree warning issued, another 15-20cm of snow expected – nationwide disruptions

The cold snap and heavy snowfall in Hungary has resulted in switch failure slowing down rail traffic in several places in the country on Tuesday morning, with several services running behind schedule and some trains replaced by buses, while in many parts of the country, the road surface is salty, slushy, or covered in snow.

Visibility is also limited in the areas affected by the snowfall, which is why traffic is slowing down significantly, according to the transport authorities.

The south-eastern two-thirds of the country is forecast to receive another 5-15cm of snow by midnight, with HungaroMet Zrt. issuing a second-degree (orange) warning for Baranya and Bács-Kiskun counties for today.

Temperatures are expected to remain below freezing except in the eastern regions, so the snow will set in and roads may freeze.

In southern parts, more than 20cm of fresh snow may fall by Wednesday morning, with 20-30cm accumulating.

A strong north-westerly wind may result in snowdrifts, mainly in areas to the west of the Danube.

Nationwide disruptions

Heavy snow is battering nearly the entire country overnight on Monday, slashing visibility across affected areas and grinding traffic to a crawl, according to the Útinform website. Road surfaces are a treacherous mix of slush, snow slop, and patchy ice in places—except in the southeastern Csongrád-Csanád and Békés counties, where they’re just wet and salt-slicked.
