Brand-new bridge over busy motorway near Lake Velence set to open soon! – photos

A brand-new pedestrian and cycle bridge spanning the M7 motorway near Lake Velence is nearing completion, with authorities confirming that walkers and cyclists will be able to use the crossing from this spring.

The investment, delivered by motorway operator MKIF Zrt., is designed to improve safety and accessibility in one of Hungary’s most popular leisure and holiday regions, frequently visited by cyclists and families throughout the year.

Final works underway

According to the latest update, only finishing touches remain before the bridge can open. In the coming days, crews will complete electrical works for the bridge lighting and finish paving and surfacing tasks. Protective anti-corrosion coating will also be applied to the deck once weather conditions meet the required temperature standards.

Landscaping around the structure is also progressing. New street furniture will be installed and vegetation planted in the surrounding area over the next few months to improve both comfort and appearance.

Testing before opening

Before the handover, the bridge will undergo a scheduled load test in February to ensure it meets all safety and technical requirements. Once this is successfully completed, the technical inspection and formal handover process can begin, followed by the opening to traffic.

Old bridge to be removed

The previous pedestrian bridge remains visible next to the new structure but will soon be dismantled. Renovating the old crossing was not considered viable due to the planned widening of the M7 motorway, scheduled for 2027. Demolition is expected to start only after the new bridge is operational, likely in May.

If you missed it:

Minor motorway restrictions

Drivers should note that temporary traffic restrictions are currently in place on the Balaton-bound side of the M7 near the bridge. A short section is subject to an 80 km/h speed limit while construction continues.

Once completed, the new crossing will provide a safer and more modern link for both locals and visitors travelling between the areas around Lake Velence, further supporting cycling and outdoor tourism in the region.
