Weekend tram chaos in Budapest: Three major lines to run shorter routes, replacement buses coming

Several busy tram lines in Budapest will operate on shortened routes on the next two Saturdays due to maintenance works, the Budapest Transport Centre (BKK) has announced.

According to the official statement, trams 17, 19 and 41 will not run their full routes on 14 and 21 February between 7:30 AM and 2 PM, as gardening and tree maintenance works are being carried out along Bécsi Road between Szépvölgyi Road and Zsigmond Square.

How the routes will change

During the affected hours:

  • Tram 17 will run only between Savoya Park and Széll Kálmán Square
  • Trams 19 and 41 will operate solely between Kelenföld railway station or Kamaraerdei Youth Park and Batthyány Square

The northern sections of the lines will be temporarily suspended while arborists carry out tree care works along the closed stretch.

Replacement buses to cover the missing sections

To help passengers, BKK will operate replacement buses:

  • Bus 17 between Bécsi Road–Vörösvári Road and Széll Kálmán Square
  • Bus 19, replacing both tram 19 and 41 services between Bécsi Road–Vörösvári Road and Batthyány Square

Travellers should allow extra time for their journeys, as replacement buses may take longer than trams.

Alternative routes into the city centre

Passengers travelling from the Bécsi Road and Vörösvári Road area towards the city centre are advised to use:

  • Tram 1, then change at Flórián Square to bus 9, or
  • The M3 metro from Göncz Árpád City Centre

BKK recommends planning ahead and checking updated timetables before travelling.
