Transatlantic flights return: Budapest Airport launches summer schedule!

Budapest Airport, part of the VINCI Airports network, is set to launch its summer timetable at the end of March, bringing a major expansion in connectivity. The new schedule features additional European destinations, the long-awaited return of transatlantic flights, and increased capacity on existing routes, offering passengers more flexibility when planning their 2026 holidays.

Overall, travellers can choose from 160 destinations, 220 routes and more than 15 million available seats, marking one of the busiest summer seasons in the airport’s history.

Transatlantic flights return after years

One of the most anticipated developments is the return of long-haul connections across the Atlantic. After a seven-year hiatus, American Airlines will relaunch its Budapest–Philadelphia service with daily flights from May, while Air Canada will resume its Toronto route with four weekly flights from June.

These services significantly improve connectivity beyond their direct destinations. Thanks to the networks of the two airlines, passengers from Budapest will gain easier access to more than 100 destinations across North America and the Caribbean.

Beyond convenience, the return of these routes is also expected to benefit Hungary’s economy. Long-haul flights typically attract high-spending leisure and business travellers, while also supporting sectors such as river cruise tourism, which relies heavily on overseas visitors.

Diversification strategy brings more airlines per route

The 2026 summer timetable reflects the results of a diversification strategy introduced nearly two years ago by Budapest Airport and VINCI Airports. The aim is to strengthen key routes by involving multiple airlines, increasing both capacity and competition.

From May, Condor will launch a direct Budapest–Frankfurt service. Together with Lufthansa’s existing flights, this will provide around 10,000 weekly seats to one of Germany’s most important business hubs.

Asia connections expand further

Budapest’s links to Asia are also set to grow. From April 2026, Asiana Airlines will introduce flights between Budapest and Seoul. Combined with Korean Air’s existing service, the South Korean capital will be accessible up to six times per week.

Connections to China are also strengthening, with passenger traffic on direct routes showing a 43% increase compared to 2024. Notably, around one-third of travellers use Budapest as a transfer hub.

New European destinations and stronger popular routes

Another key pillar of Budapest Airport’s strategy is maximising infrastructure capacity. As part of this, low-cost carriers have announced 17 new routes to 12 new European destinations for the summer season.

Wizz Air is launching new services to destinations including Ankara, Bergen, Billund, Lamezia Terme, Kefalonia, Kalamata, Menorca, Sofia, Varna, Dubrovnik and Zadar. Meanwhile, Ryanair is expanding its offer with routes such as Kraków, Lamezia Terme and Dubrovnik.

Greek and Croatian destinations will be particularly strong this year, while significant growth is also expected towards the Baltic and Scandinavian regions. Seat capacity to Baltic capitals will reach 125,000, while the Scandinavian market will offer 910,000 seats, pointing to robust inbound tourism demand similar to long-haul markets.

If you missed it:

A stronger role for Budapest in global travel

With returning transatlantic flights, expanded Asian links and a wider European network, Budapest Airport is positioning itself as an increasingly important hub in Central and Eastern Europe.

The good news is that the 2026 summer schedule not only enhances travel options for passengers but also supports tourism, business travel and Hungary’s economic growth.
