It’s astonishing what lies beneath the depths of Hungary’s Hévízi Lake, near Lake Balaton. Despite the lake having protected status for decades, experts have now uncovered a completely unknown underwater cave system beneath its western shore.

How the secret was uncovered

Surveying the entire lake proved to be a formidable challenge, as traditional satellite-based mapping is impossible underwater. Experts adopted a special approach: divers placed buoys on the surface above the points identified deep below, achieving centimetre-level accuracy, according to the Somogy Vármegyei Hírportál.

This method allowed them to precisely map the side passages that had previously been omitted from official records.

The work was physically demanding. Divers had to operate several metres below the surface using specialised equipment, while ensuring the delicate ecological balance of the lake was not disturbed.

Hévízi Lake is not a typical volcanic thermal lake but a unique peat-based spring lake, home to numerous exceptional geological formations.
