Planning to vote at Hungary’s elections? You might be falsely put on the minority vote list

Change language:
Independent member of the Hungarian Parliament Ákos Hadházy has raised fresh concerns about potential irregularities in Hungary’s electoral system, claiming that some voters may have been incorrectly registered as minority voters without their knowledge.
Member of Parliament found irregularities
In a recent social media post, Hadházy described a case in which a citizen discovered their name listed as a Ukrainian minority voter in the official electoral register. According to the MP, this status would prevent the individual from voting for party lists, including opposition parties, on election day, writes HVG.
Hadházy argued that such cases could represent a broader method of influencing election outcomes, suggesting that voters might only discover the issue too late to act.
Election fraud? More than half of Hungarian voters think it’s possible.
Minority lists and political implications
In Hungary, voters who register as belonging to a recognised national minority can vote for minority lists instead of party lists. Critics argue that this system may be vulnerable to misuse if registrations occur without voters’ informed consent.
Data highlighted by Political Capital shows notable differences between minority registrations. Fewer than 25,000 voters reportedly signed up for the German minority list, while more than 47,000 registered for the Roma list.
The sharp increase in Roma registrations in recent weeks has drawn particular attention. Analysts suggest that, with sufficient turnout, this could be enough to secure a preferential parliamentary mandate for the Roma minority.
Even government affiliated forecast denies Fidesz supermajority with Mi Hazánk as rival polls predict Tisza landslide.
Calls for vigilance ahead of elections
Hadházy has urged citizens to verify their registration status through Hungary’s online administrative system, warning that transparency is essential to maintaining trust in the electoral process.
While he acknowledged optimism among opposition supporters, he cautioned against dismissing the possibility of electoral manipulation. The debate highlights ongoing tensions over the fairness and integrity of Hungary’s democratic institutions as the country approaches a crucial vote.
