Hundreds of flights, including many to and from Budapest, cancelled; Chinese airlines also change timetable

Change language:

Lufthansa has cancelled hundreds of flights due to a four-day-long strike by its crew. Furthermore, Chinese airlines have also changed their spring-summer timetables and cut the number of flights to and from Budapest.

Budapest flights cancelled due to strike for higher wages

According to Portfolio, the strike by Lufthansa crew that started on Monday will last until at least Thursday. Almost 20,000 flight attendants from Lufthansa and its regional subsidiary, CityLine, have gone on strike. Their UFO trade union is demanding salary increases and better working conditions. As a result, hundreds of flights will be cancelled, including those between the Hungarian capital, Frankfurt and Munich. This will be the fifth strike in the Lufthansa group this year.

Fewer Chinese flights

Meanwhile, two Chinese airlines have also announced cutbacks to their flights to Budapest. China Southern Airlines has modified its May–June timetable and reduced the number of flights between Guangzhou and Budapest from three per week to two per week, eliminating Thursday flights.

Hainan Airlines has reduced the number of flights between the Hungarian capital and Shenzhen—the third most populous city in China—to one per week, eliminating the Monday connection. Air China and China Eastern Airlines/Shanghai Airlines have not yet modified the number of flights to Hungary, Budflyer wrote.

The cutbacks may be connected to a looming jet fuel shortage caused by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz following the US–Israeli attack against Iran.
