Outgoing PM Orbán says love was the focus of their campaign, hands in resignation from party chairmanship

Change language:

The national board of the outgoing ruling Fidesz party has convened a congress to elect party officials on 13 June, Fidesz MEP Tamás Deutsch told journalists after a board meeting on Tuesday. Before the meeting, Orbán fielded multiple questions from the press. He said their campaign’s focus had been love.

According to Portfolio, the outgoing premier said today’s meeting would involve a deep analysis. He added that he would decide in May what exactly he would do for a living. He described Fidesz as the most united community in the country. He believed that Tisza had launched a hate-provoking campaign, while theirs had been based on love. He did not mention the warmongering billboard campaign started by a government-linked NGO, or the infamous AI videos they shared depicting how Hungarian men would be dragged to war in Ukraine and killed there. You can watch one of these videos, shared by the official Facebook page of Budapest Fidesz:

Orbán said Péter Szijjártó was the most successful Hungarian foreign minister and voiced his concerns about Tisza’s decision not to accept him as Deputy Speaker of Parliament.

The former premier handed in his resignation to the national board, but it refused to accept it. Therefore, Orbán remains head of the outgoing ruling party Fidesz at least until 13 June.

Both Fidesz leader Viktor Orbán and board chairman László Kövér declined to answer questions after the meeting.

Fidesz will have 44 MPs in the new parliament, while KDNP (the Christian Democratic People’s Party) will have 8. Tisza will have 141 MPs, while the far-right Mi Hazánk (Our Homeland Movement) will have 6.

  1. I understand that Orbán Viktor is trying to come to terms with the rejection, and, yes, their campaign, The Fidesz Campaign, was based on preservation and love of country.

That said, the Fidesz campaign was not solely about love, but, also about character destruction, because, for at least a year and a half smears and endless negative innuendoes were thrown at Magyar Péter, from every quadrant.

Certainly Magyar’s campaign was negative, because it was centered around the premise that Orbán and Fidesz had, at best, not economically potentiated the country, or, at worst, had simply ruined it with corruption and neglect.

This is quite similar to the campaign Trump waged in both 2016 and 2024, and, both times, it was a winner for him, as it was for Magyar.

It was not a winner for previous challengers to Orbán, however, so the country is ruined premise does not always sell.
