National Cohesion Day – Commemoration hold in Esztergom

Budapest (MTI) – Gergely Gulyás, deputy speaker of the Hungarian parliament, attended a commemoration held in Esztergom, north of Budapest, on Wednesday, marking the upcoming Day of National Cohesion.

In his address, Gulyás said that the Trianon Peace Treaty, concluding the first world war, was an integral part of Hungarians’ national identity. He said that the link between Hungarian communities in different countries of the Carpathian Basin was a “fundamental experience”.

The Hungarian parliament declared June 4 the Day of National Cohesion in 2010 to mark the anniversary of the day the peace treaty was signed in the Grand Trianon chateau of Versailles in 1920. Under the treaty, two-thirds of Hungary’s territory was ceded to neighbouring countries.
