Memmorial plaque commemorating Gulag prisoner Menczer
Budapest, September 8 (MTI) – Economy Minister Mihály Varga unveiled on Thursday a memorial plaque commemorating Gusztáv Menczer, a political prisoner and forced labourer of the Soviet Gulag.
Addressing the ceremony in Budapest, Varga described Menczer as an innocent political prisoner who was tortured in the Gulag. Menczer righteously stood up for the persecuted, supporting his fellow prisoners and forced labourers by fighting for financial compensation and their legal and moral rights, he said.
The ceremony at Menczer’s former home was addressed by Ottó Kósa, the oldest Hungarian Gulag survivor, who said Menczer risked his own life to help others.
