Kövér, Polish Senate president discuss Europe’s future
Budapest, September 12 (MTI) – Both Hungary and Poland want to be pro-active in the debate over the future of the European Union, House Speaker László Kövér said after meeting Polish Senate President Stanislaw Karczewski in Budapest on Monday.
The migration crisis has made it clear that the European Union as a system of institutions and Europe as a political community of shared values have arrived at crossroads, with serious signs of crisis in the economy, democratic progress and the operation of EU institutions, Kövér said.
Time is ripe, especially after the Brexit, for reconsidering “what we would like to achieve in the future” and “what kind of EU we want to bequeath to our children and grandchildren,” Kövér said.
Central Europe is gaining in importance and the Visegrad Four countries have become the most dynamically developing region of the European Union which should entail political consequences, he said.
Kövér stressed the need to put an end to the era in which decision-makers in Brussels and other capitals of long-time EU member states tried to dictate the rules of conduct to central Europe, applying double standards.
Karczewski said Poland’s support helped Hungary to have a stronger voice in the European Union.
