Gyurcsany Promises Return Of Free Republic
(MTI) – Democratic resistance will sooner or later produce results and the free Hungarian republic will return, opposition DK leader Ferenc Gyurcsany told a public forum in Debrecen in northeast Hungary on Wednesday.
Gyurcsany said that DK had been set up to encourage people not to look back but to look ahead.
Hungary had never before been in such state of upheaval and helplessness as today but one should not make a compromise and give up the dream to once again live in a free country, Gyurcsany said.
He encouraged the people of Debrecen to join forces for the local council elections which he said was necessary to oust the current city leaders who belong to the ruling Fidesz party.
In an interview with Gyurcsany published on Wednesday by online newspaper Index, Gyurcsany said his greatest mistake had been to accept the post of prime minister in 2004 with the backing of the Socialists. Commenting on the infamous Oszod speech, a leaked speech in 2006 in which Gyurcsany told the party group behind closed doors that they had lied about the state of the economy to win the general election, he said he was still proud of it, but added that he was not involved in leaking it.
Debrecen Mayor and Fidesz deputy leader Lajos Kosa told MTI in response to the interview that Gyurcsany was indeed completely unsuitable to fill the post of prime minister and the fact that he is proud of the Oszod speech showed that he was also unsuitable for any role in public life.
