Ukrainian MP: How much money does it cost to buy a Hungarian PM?
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán gave a divisive interview to German newspaper Bild on Russian President Vladimir Putin, NATO and Russia. Several politicians reacted to the Hungarian Prime Minister’s statements.
Viktor Orbán’s divisive interview
As we reported, the Hungarian Prime Minister gave an exclusive interview to the German newspaper Bild. In the interview, Viktor Orbán said that Putin is not a war criminal, that Ukraine cannot win the war, and also spoke about NATO’s strength.
At one point in the interview, Orbán states that Ukraine is no longer a sovereign country because it is dependent on Western money.
Reactions to the Hungarian Prime Minister
There were heated responses to Viktor Orbán’s interview. Former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko’s centre-right liberal European Solidarity MP Oleksiy Honcharenko wrote on Twitter about Putin.
“Putin is not a war criminal, Orbán said. Orbán, please tell me, how much does it cost to buy a Hungarian prime minister?” the Ukrainian MP wrote.
German Green MEP Daniel Freund responded even more succinctly: “what a bizarre interview with Viktor Orbán!”
The Ukrainian Deputy Interior Minister Anton Gerashchenko has already reacted at greater length, index.hu reports. Gerashchenko responded to the parts concerning Ukrainian sovereignty and Putin. “I wonder who or rather what inspired Mr Orbán to draw such conclusions? Perhaps the record gas discounts that Russia is now offering its allies?” wrote Gerashchenko, who also posted a picture of Orbán and Putin grinning at each other.
The Hungarian opposition also reacted
Not only foreign politicians, but also Momentum, a member of the Hungarian opposition, reacted to Orbán’s statements. The party writes that “we find it unacceptable that Orbán denies Ukraine’s independence, which is recognised by the UN, as well as Putin’s guilt at the International Criminal Court”.

A sovereign country is a state that has the highest authority over a territory. It is independent and not under the authority of any other country1. According to international law, sovereign states have a permanent population, defined territory, a government not under another, and the capacity to interact with other sovereign states2. Sovereign nations have a defined territory with just one government. These nations have a permanent population and can enter into relations with other sovereign countries3.
The above is the definition of a sovereign country. Part of the definition is “independent, not under the authority of any other country”. This statement is contradicted by the proxy war Ukraine is fighting on behalf of President Biden. All other conditions are met.
Russia is vital to maintaining the Hungarian economy. Energy supply is paramount for a country without natural resources. Prime Minister Orban has not been bought like the Ukrainian government by Ukrainian oligarchs. A statement was made by Vice President Biden if a special investigator of Burisma was not fired, Ukraine will not receive a billion. President Biden said, “son of a bitch they fired him”. The investigation had to be stopped because Biden’s son was working for Burisma, Ukrainian oil company. Prime Minister Orban may have a point.
Uuuuuuuuuh, a Ukrainian politician, of all people, should keep quiet about corruption!
Ukrainians lecturing about corruption. How rich! Ukraine is arguably the 2nd most corrupt nation in the world after the United States their benefactor.
@mariavontheresa your reliable sources / references are missing, for a change?
Mr. Orbán’s comment was unhelpful. Off the cuff, ill conceived remarks on Twitter by Ukrainian are not helping, either. Putin’s Russia started this war – I really do not get why this particular fact appears to get ignored, above. We’re very lucky to be a NATO member, and thus relatively safe.
No one forgot Putin started the war. No one forgot that the civil war started in 2014. On a pretext of Ukraine joining NATO, Russia decided to reclaim the “ancient Russian lands”. Had Zelensky have not alienated all ethnic Russians, things may have been different. Oppression never endears a government.
The topic of the article was how much did Russia pay Prime Minister Orban, the answer is nothing. P.M. Orban’s policies are always pro Hungarian.
@Norbert, Being a NATO member makes you feel secure? You must be joking? Right about now Hungary would be better off as a neutral country.
After Wagner practically made Putin soil his pants Russia is now diverting some of its’ supply of heavy weapons including tanks to protect internal control within Russia. This is mighty Russia where the regime cannot trust its’ own people and elements within the military. The elites in Moscow and St. Petersberg are now living in fear.
…And, on a lighter note: “Not much, just (yet) another new sports stadium, or better still, just show me the money”. 😉 😀
