All three Hungarian teams safely through to the next round of the Europa League
Debreceni VSC and MTK Budapest both won at home yesterday evening to progress to the 2nd qualifying round of the Europa League. Videoton FC were on the receiving end of a 2-0 defeat in Moldova but still edge through 3-2 on aggregate.
Having drawn 1-1 away from home in the first leg MTK Budapest appeared to have the toughest task of Hungary’s three Europa League entrants. Immediately on the attack, they took the lead after 6 minutes as Hungary right-back Barnabás Bese set Dániel Gera in the clear and his cross was volleyed home by Darko Nikač. Aktobe came increasingly into the match, threatening the MTK goal a few times either side of half-time. Both sides squandered opportunities to score as the match became stretched, but Bese put the tie beyond doubt with six minutes left to play as he finished off another fine move down the right. MTK now face Azerbaijani side Gabala FK.
Debreceni VSC were looking to entertain a crowd of over 8,000 against San Marino side La Fiorita, having won the away leg 5-0. They dominated the match from start to finish but found it hard to break down a well organised defence. They had to wait until just before half-time to take the lead, Tibor Tisza receiving a pass from Dávid Holman before turning and lashing the ball high into the net from 10 yards out.
Holman grabbed a second six minutes after the break, weaving his way through the box before firing low into the far corner from close range. The final score of 2-0 sees Debrecen through 7-0 on aggregate, and next up are Belarusian opposition in the shape of Torpedo Zhodino.
Videoton FC travelled to Chișinău with a three goal advantage over opponents Zaria Balti to protect but were shocked early on as the home side took a 9th minute lead with their first shot on goal. Things got worse for Vidi in the 29th minute as Zaria doubled their lead with their second attack of note, and although Videoton dictated play, the half ended with Henning Berg’s side protecting a slender 3-2 aggregate lead.
The Székesfehérvár side continue to dominate in the second half, but although the home side also had chances to score there were no more goals as Videoton go through to face Belgrade side FK Čukarički.
