What does the legislation say?
Hungarian law doesn’t make any provision for medical cannabis per se. But, the Hungarian National Institute of Pharmacy and Nutrition (OGYÉI) does allow the use of a cannabis-derived drug called Sativex. This drug is beneficial in the treatment of multiple sclerosis conditions.
It’s worth noting that CBD is legal in most parts of Europe and according to Hungarian law, cannabis that contains less than .2% of the THC compound is considered hemp and is thus legal to grow.
Is it legal to buy CBD in Hungary?
While there are plenty of websites that sell CBD and advertise it as a legal substance in Hungary, the Hungarian government hasn’t taken a definitive stance for or against CBD. So whether edibles are legal or not is up for interpretation.
Based on legislation, it’s legal to cultivate hemp in Hungary, but only if it contains less than 0.2% THC. This would mean that supplements and edibles that contain CBD are only allowed if they’re derived from hemp seeds and contain only trace amounts of THC as indicated above.
What about topical products?
According to Hungarian law, CBD infused cosmetic products that are derived from hemp seed and contain 0.001% THC are allowed. Edibles that contain more than 0.002% CBD are considered novel foods and since CBD isn’t a controlled substance in Hungary one would assume that they are permissible as well.
What about cannabis?
For the most part, it’s illegal to use and carry the whole cannabis plant in Hungary. You could spend up to 15 years in jail if caught with cannabis, or even a cannabis-related substance.
Since cannabis is unregulated, it’s safe to say that it’s difficult to find reliable suppliers of clean and safe CBD products in the country, unless you look online. Even then, you’ll have to use your discernment and talk to an experienced local who might be able to lead you in the right direction.
Budapest is the capital of Hungary and a popular travel destination in Eastern Europe. But, if you’re someone who has to use CBD for health and/or recreational purposes, you’ll want to know if CBD and edibles are legal in the country.
Hopefully, this article cleared up some of that confision and will help you to make an informed decision.
