Attention: New Hungarian motorway to be closed for 6 months due to its catastrophic state – VIDEO
The M30 motorway was opened two years ago. By now, cracks on it have become so bad that the operator has closed it for several months. The section was built by the Austrian Strabag, which has already been ordered by the Hungarian state to carry out the repairs.
New motorway
It was only 2.5 years ago, in October 2021, that the section of the M30 was opened to traffic. The motorway has now been closed with immediate effect, and the road construction company (Strabag) has been called upon by the operator, the Hungarian Concession Infrastructure Development Plc. (MKIF) to start the warranty repairs as soon as possible, Világgazdaság writes.
According to the latest information from Útinform, the restriction between the 33 Miskolc-North junction and the 40 Szikszó junction
will be in force from 17 February to 17 August in both directions.
This means that for at least half a year motorists will not be able to drive on this stretch.
A video was also published on Világgazdaság, taken just before the road was completely closed. You can see how the road surface between the two lanes has slid away from each other in several places, making it very dangerous to drive on:
The news was confirmed to Világgazdaság by László Szimicsku, communications director of MKIF. He added that as operators they had maintained traffic as long as possible, but the displacement had become so great that they had no choice but to close the road completely.
A 100-150 metre wide section of the track is sunken due to the displacement of its structure. The latter is 10-12 metres of soil,
explained Simicsku.
He pointed out that it will now almost certainly not be possible to travel on the closed section for many months, as the entire structure may have to be rebuilt. However, he pointed out that MKIF was not involved in the project, neither as investor nor as contractor. Thus, all they could do was report the problem to the Hungarian state, which was the investor.
Strabag already notified
The M30 motorway was opened to traffic in October 2021. The project, which started in 2018, cost a total of HUF 200 billion (EUR 514 million), making it one of the largest projects of the previous EU cycle, Világgazdaság writes.
The whole project has been divided into three parts by the contracting authority, NIF, with the now problematic 10.4-kilometre section between Miskolc and Szikszó being won by a consortium of Strabag Építő Ltd. and Strabag AG for HUF 39.4 billion (EUR 101 million).
The Hungarian state, the investor, has already called on the company to carry out the warranty restoration works according to the schedule.
