Austria reports 6,211 new COVID-19 cases

Austria reported on Wednesday 6,211 new COVID-19 infections within the past 24 hours, an all-time high since the outbreak of the pandemic, according to data published by the Ministry of Interior.

So far, there have been 125,099 positive test results. As of Wednesday morning, 1,227 people had died and 77,036 recovered from COVID-19.

There are currently 2,584 people in hospital for coronavirus treatment,

383 of them are in intensive care units,

data showed.

Chancellor Sebastian Kurz said last week that 6,000 new patients per day will be the threshold above which “our good health system” reaches its limits. This threshold has now been exceeded.

The Alpine country has entered a second lockdown since midnight Tuesday, about 28 hours after a terror attack in central Vienna left five dead and more than 20 wounded.

Exit restrictions apply nationwide between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. During these hours, people are only allowed to leave home for certain reasons, while many facilities have to close. These measures will apply until the end of November.

According to experts, the effects of the restrictions will only show up in a few days in the form of possibly falling infection numbers.
