Extreme cold approaching! – Balaton to be frozen next week?
According to the latest forecasts, seriously cold weather is to arrive in the following nights.
As low as -15 can be expected
The coldest temperature can be expected on Tuesday morning, writes napi.hu. It can be colder than -15 degrees Celsius in snowy landscapes, such as the whole of Western Hungary and along the eastern, northeastern border.
Due to the great cold, there is a good chance that the larger lakes may freeze, so a continuous layer of ice may cover Lake Balaton as well.
Balaton completely frozen
The last time Lake Balaton froze completely was in January 2017. The days were so cold that it was possible to skate from the southern shore to the northern shore, which is about a 5-kilometre distance. Hundreds of people did so, here is a video about it:

The crazy winter of 1987
Hungary, with a few exceptions, is not really a place of really cold winters. In the last few years, winters have generally been milder, often only letting us see snow for the first time in January, and it was not really typical for the snow to last too long either. It is also true that the winters are becoming less predictable and more extreme. However, it was not always like that.
One of the most famous winters in modern history is the legendary winter of 1987 when temperatures were as low as almost minus twenty degrees in Budapest, and a lot of snow fell as well.
The city stood completely still at this time. However, a similar situation will not be expected this time.
In the following picture, you can see how it looked that crazy winter in Budapest right at the Mester utca-Ferenc körút corner:
