Dívány reported about the best Hungarian castles to visit during winter.
First, let’s take a look at the Castle of Füzér which is located in the Zemplén mountain range. You have to leave your elegant shoes at home and wear the tightest ones as you have to climb many stairs and get through forests to reach this medieval building. The castle was built in the 13th century.
It was even the secret place of the Holy Crown during the 1500s. The castle was renovated in the past years and was decorated to look like its visitors stepped back in time while entering the building.
Another Hungarian castle in the region of Zemplén is the Castle of Boldogkőváralja, which has the most breathtaking view among all of the Hungarian castles. Built in the 13th century, it was often visited by Béla IV, King of Hungary. With colourful programs, the castle is awaiting everyone who is interested in medieval Hungarian culture.
Sometimes, the staff of the castle even dresses up in medieval clothes.
The third castle is the Almássy Castle in Gyula, which is often called the Hungarian Downton Abbey. Inside the castle, an exhibition shows the visitors the life of the aristocracy and their servants. There is even a castle tour to get to know every single small detail of the castle and its history, which you should not miss.
