Hungary’s greatest solar energy project is underway with Chinese Huawei

Hungary’s largest energy storage facility is currently under construction near Szolnok, with Chinese company Huawei involved in the solar energy project. The contract was signed in February, with MAVIR Ltd. as the investor.

According to portfolio.hu, the project is estimated to cost HUF 8.5 billion (EUR 21 million), with a capacity of 60 MWh. Currently, Hungary’s entire energy storage capacity stands at 30 MW. The new storage battery is set to be operational by 2025, making it easier and more cost-effective to store renewable energy. This development is expected to enable the green energy sector to make a greater contribution to Hungary’s energy mix.

The largest energy storage facility in Hungary currently has a capacity of only 7.68 MW. The new facility near Szolnok will be one of the largest in Central Europe, with support from Chinese company Huawei providing equipment for the project.

The primary driver behind this project is the rapid expansion of solar energy production in Hungary.

Solar energy production in Hungary reaches 6,000 MW

On Tuesday, the energy minister announced that industrial-scale solar parks and household solar installations combined have achieved a production capacity of 6,000 megawatts of electricity in Hungary.

On sunny days, solar energy alone can meet the country’s basic electricity needs, with average consumption ranging from 5,500 to 6,500 MW, Csaba Lantos stated during the inauguration of MVM Next Energiakereskedelmi’s customer service office in Kalocsa, located in central-southern Hungary.

Lantos further outlined the government’s plans to increase the share of renewable energy and significantly expand storage capacity. At the same time, he noted the extension of the life cycle of the Paks 1 nuclear power plant and the ongoing construction of the Paks 2 power plant.

“We are committed to ensuring that Hungary’s power generation capacity exceeds the demand for electricity,” he concluded.

  1. This is wrong on so many levels… Forget China and forget the solar B.S. Start fracking and coal-mining, and go nuclear (both fission AND fusion).
