Public transport services to increase frequency in Budapest as new school year begins

Starting Monday, 1 September, BKK services will operate on their regular school-year schedule in Budapest, offering more frequent service than during the summer months.

Beginning Monday, the 81 trolleybus will run more often, making travel in Zugló more comfortable. Meanwhile, only modern CAF trams will operate on Line 50 moving forward.

The Budapest Transport Center (BKK) is urging residents to leave earlier than usual on Monday morning, as the first day of school will likely bring increased traffic and congested roads during rush hour across the capital.

BKK services will follow the school-year timetable starting Monday, with peak-time frequency maintained until 9 a.m. on the key routes.

Expanded service and upgrades roll out in September

BKK continues to deploy its new fleet of modern, air-conditioned, low-floor CAF trams. In line with accessibility goals, only these upgraded trams will run along Line 50—both on weekdays and weekends—starting Monday.

The newly introduced 81 trolleybus, already popular over the summer, will now run every 10–12 minutes during the morning rush hour, improving school commute options and enhancing travel comfort in Zugló.

To accommodate increased demand, the 160 bus will now run every 15 minutes instead of every 20 during weekday afternoon peak hours.

Thanks to cooperation between BKK and the MÁV Group, the 218 bus has been rerouted to serve the rapidly growing areas of Üröm and Pilisborosjenő instead of the Solymár shopping centre. Its timetable has been adjusted to align with trains at Aranyvölgy railway station, improving connections to these communities.

Travel to the Solymár Auchan store is now available via bus routes 800, 820, 821, and 830, which will stop there more frequently than before.

The 64-series buses will also stop more often at Solymár’s railway station to better connect with trains, making it easier for riders in Solymár, Budaliget, and Pesthidegkút to access downtown Budapest via rail.

These upgrades to the blue suburban bus lines are being rolled out in collaboration with Budapest’s transport organiser and led by MÁV-VOLÁN, commissioned by the Ministry of Construction and Transport (ÉKM).

A new route, the 274 “Csobajbusz,” has also launched, providing public transit access to institutions in Csobajbánya and offering direct connections to bus 31 and HÉV lines H8 and H9 for broader city access.

With ongoing renovations at Keleti Railway Station, BKK is supporting commuters by introducing the 37E express tram replacement service and boosting frequency on other lines through 20 September.

Due to the station closure, the M2 metro line will operate more frequently during weekday morning rush hours starting 1 September. BKK also recommends using the metro system for transfers between the capital’s major railway hubs.

Revised schedules are now available, and passengers are encouraged to plan their journeys using the BudapestGO app, which offers real-time updates and route recommendations. The app also allows users to purchase tickets and passes directly.

BKK urges caution for back-to-school commuters

On Monday morning, travellers are advised to leave 5–10 minutes earlier than usual due to expected congestion near schools and on popular routes.

Drivers should also consider starting their commute earlier to avoid stress and reduce the risk of accidents amid increased traffic.

Motorists are urged to exercise extra patience and vigilance near schools due to higher pedestrian and cyclist traffic during school hours.
