BOX – Zsolt Erdei wins WBO European Champion match, announces retirement
Budapest, March 9 (MTI) – The Hungarian boxer Zsolt Erdei beat the Georgian Shalva Jomardashvili in a match for the WBO European Champion title in Kecskemet, central Hungary, on Saturday.
The 39-year-old Erdei announced his retirement from competition after the match. He will continue in the sport as a coach.
Erdei is the former undefeated Lineal and WBO light-heavyweight champion, WBC cruiserweight champion and the first Hungarian to win a world title in two weight divisions. Erdei boxed at the 2000 Summer Olympics, where he won a bronze medal in the middleweight division. He won 33 of his 34 professional fights. His only defeat was last year at the hands of Russian Denis Grachev in a controversial split decision.
