Brace yourself: driving is about to get crazy expensive in Hungary
From Wednesday, fuel prices will rise again in Hungary. In addition, from 2024, the price of motorway vignette may also soar significantly, as they will be calculated on the basis of August inflation.
Price of petrol will rise
According to the calculations of portfolio.hu, the price of petrol and diesel will increase by an average of HUF 7 (EURÂ 0.018) per litre from Wednesday. The average price of 95-litre petrol will be 636 HUF/litre (EUR 1.67), while the price of diesel will sit at 645 HUF/litre (EUR 1.69).
Vignette price will also soar
The Hungarian motorway vignette price for 2024 will be based on the August prices of this year. As things currently stand, this could mean a 15% increase. As a result, a national vignette for passenger cars could cost more than HUF 56,000 (EUR 146.56) next year.
The ministry had previously said that “the price of all stickers will be increased uniformly by the consumer price index for August 2023 and the consumer price index for August 2022, as published by the Central Statistical Office”.
However, this was not the case last year, writes infostart.hu. In 2023, the change was not in line with inflation, but went up by only 5% in most cases.
