Breaking – government to cap food prices
The government has decided to put a cap on the prices of six food products effective February 1, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced on Facebook on Wednesday.
The prices of sugar, wheat flour, sunflower-seed oil, leg of pork, chicken breast and milk with 2.8 percent fat will be frozen at their Oct. 15, 2021 levels due to rising food prices, Orbán said. Each shop will have to reduce current prices to October levels, he added.
Orbán noted that prices all over Europe were increasing due to higher energy prices. The Hungarian government, however, protects families, he added. “We have reined in increasing petrol prices, capped mortgage interest rates, and we have a utility fee cut policy, under which Hungarian families are supplied energy at fixed prices, which will protect them,” he said.

The stores will loose money on these products and will have to raise prices even more on uncapped products to compensate for the loss.
That’s what happenes when you have a POS dictator MORON in power.
Are these products healthy? And 6 products! A sop in the run=up to the election?
Splendid idea. Not only will this help families, but every other Hungarians. Inflation is becoming a problem throughout the world as seen with the protests (turned deadly) in Kazakhstan about rising fuel prices.
People can criticize and point out the many flaws of the Hungarian government. At least, many of their policies have been benefiting Hungarians.
@Anonymous
If the cap is on essential ingredients (like flour, sugar, and sunflower oil) then that’s great. Who really gives a damn if stores have to raise prices on other products like junk food? If anything it will benefit the public by encouraging them to eat healthier (ex: by cooking instead of eating unhealthy meals)
Then again, you are so blinded by your ideology that you always have to look at things negatively. It’s funny because I believe you also posted comments on other articles about the Kazakhstan protests in support of the protesters who originally protested (before turning into a riot and used by others to commit violence) because the government LIFTED THE CAP on fuel prices. This is based on the presumption that this is the same person who is typing under Anonymous.
That said, it would also be more of a positive move if the Hungarian government also puts a cap on the price of healthy food, even if it means the skyrocket in prices of sugary drinks or alcohol.
Apart from being a strange mix of food products to cap – why sugar? Why pork but not vegetables? It has all the hallmarks of 50 Shades of .(Grey) Communism. Then again, Orbán was a Communist -he described himself as “a devoted supporter if the communist regime” and was very active in KISZ, the Communist Youth Movement as opposed to merely being a member as required to matriculate.
The Economic & Financial Landscape in Hungary is in Serious Trouble.
It detests me – reports exampled in the past 7 – 10 days – using terms like “Boom” in the property market and “Exciting” year 2022 – to invest in the property market in Hungary.
REMEMBER : we continue to live with a Novel Virus – 12th January 2022 in Hungary – new cases 9,216 – deaths 81 and total Deaths from March 2020 = 40,164.
It is expected from Scientific Medical Data that by 24th Janaury 2022 – that Europe will be “Ablaze” – with the number of cases from this “Strain” of the Novel Virus .
Are you following / watching what is – what has gone on in Great Britain ?
The case numbers of this Novel Virus – and it continues, then totals in Europe – HORRENDOUS.
The Economy of Hungary – the Prime Indicators used by Globally respected organizations – engaged to access and pass opinion(s) of the status – current and future of a countrys Economic & Financial Position – highlight – across the board – that the Economy of Hungary – is in Serious Trouble.
Mihaly Varga – Finance Minister continues to “Throw” out into the citizens arena of Hungary – that the Government have matters under control.
Mihaly Varga – continues to – IGNORE – the “words of wisdom” that are being spoken by the Govonor of the Central Bank of Hungary – Gyorgy Matolcsy the immediate “Needs” to stabalize the sinking and collapse – of the Hungarian economy.
Hungarians – yes importanant the priority what is happening in Hungary – BUT – look at Europe and Great Britain – the Economic outlook – a return of NORMALITY – in Europe & Great Britain – distanced in HAPPENING.
National Election Propaganda – April 2022 and we know the way it works and we will be “DROWNED” in it from the present Government in Office – that has mounting and growing “heat and pressure” on them – what actually and factually – is going on in Hungary.
Property Market in Budapest,Hungary – saturated in SELLERS – that dangerously and growing in DANGER – out numbers out weights – the number of BUYERS.
Foreign Investment – if they return into the market – will not SAVE – the property market of Budapest, Hungary – but be an added infection – to a major problem.
BLAME – heavily rests with – the Chinese,Vietnamise and German – Property Investors – who over the past (10) ten years have driven Property Markets across ALL of its Landscape – Flats,Apartments,Houses,Hotels,Warehouses and Storage Facilities – to the Esculated and un-realistic levals that at present we witness in Budapest, Hungary.
There will be Carnage – witnessed in the Hungarian Property Markets – that a MAJOR factor simple is – Sellers outweigh/over burden – BUYERS.
Interest Rates – Inflation – continued pressure on the forint and No tourism and PROPAGANDA – that lacks Candour and giving near to citizens – the HONEST big picture of what we as a country have to face – the growing mounting – DEBT- as a Country we have acquired – growing, the – CHALLENGE – we all are part of.

I agree with you on that point. I can see cap on sugar, which is used for baking or cooking. Like you said, why is there a cap on pork and not vegetables?
Cap on the price of healthy food can be done if you also put a tax on sugary drinks or junk food in return for subsidies for farmers.
For example, one problem in the Arctic is that Indigenous people (ex: Canada and US) cannot afford the cost of healthy food due to reasons like transportation and etc.
Thus, that is why I am not against the idea of cap on products, especially healthy food. However, the concern is the cost that the producers may have to burden. I do believe the cap can be done.
