Breaking: Minimum wage to increase this year in Hungary

The minimum wage will rise by 15% this year, announced István Hollik, Communications Director of ruling Fidesz-KDNP on Facebook. This means that the increase has been brought forward from early next year to December this year.

Minimum wage is to rise by 15% this year,

announced István Hollik, Communications Director of Fidesz-KDNP, on his Facebook page on Thursday morning. (To be more precise, he wrote “No matter how the dollar-left protested against it, the minimum wage [minimálbér] will rise by 15% this year!”, failing to mention that the EU-record inflation is 25% in Hungary, and that the minimum wage for skilled workers [bérminimum] will only increase by 10%.)

Sándor Czomba, Minister of State at the Ministry of Economic Development, recently said that the minimum wage could rise by 15% and the minimum wage (minimálbér) for skilled workers (garantált bérminimum) by 10% this year, instead of the usual date at the beginning of the year.

Much less than originally asked for by workers

Workers have previously called for next year’s minimum wage increase to be brought forward, as the government did not support the HUF 100,000 (EUR 261.64) compensation which was asked for due to high inflation in 2023. However, according to Portfolio, it is worth noting that this increase will amount to just over HUF 20,000 (EUR 52.33) (for December), which is one fifth of the original proposal (HUF 100,000 compensation).

  1. Lots of percentages, but meaningless is we don’t know what the actual minimum wage, gross/net monthly or hourly, is?

  2. Het maakt niet uit, gaan de inkomen omhoog stijgen de prijzen ook weer zo blijf je in het vicieuze cirkeltje rond draaien.

  3. The rouble right Fidesz government gives minimum wage workers a 15% increase in the face of a 25% inflation rate meaning real wages for the poorest workers have declined by 10% over the past year. Hungarians are headed for poverty under Fidesz. They will turn you into mini-Russians who are slaves to the party.
