British American Tobacco is expanding production in Pécs, in south-west Hungary, with a new 60 billion forint (EUR 152.4m) plant manufacturing smokeless products, creating 450 jobs, Péter Szijjártó, the minister of foreign affairs and trade, said in Budapest on Friday.
The new plant will enable BAT to relocate the production of new products to Pécs, turning the plant a global manufacturing centre in reduced-risk products, he said.
BAT currently employs some 1,000 people in Hungary, Szijjártó added.
The plant is certified carbon neutral, showing the government’s dedication to environmental protection while boosting economic performance, he added.
UK companies are the 7th largest group of investors in Hungary, employing some 50,000 people, he said. Bilateral trade has reached a record 6.5 billion euros last year, he added.
