A strike may paralyse Budapest Airport: trade unions want significant changes

The trade unions of Budapest Airport employees would start a collective labour dispute with Budapest Airport and its subsidiaries concerning multiple demands to improve the material benefits and working conditions. If negotiations fail to be successful, a general strike can paralyse Hungary’s main airport.
Budapest Airport may face a general strike
Trade unions joining the forces of the workers in air travel, ground handling, airport operator sectors, and the different airport service providers would start a collective labour dispute with Budapest Airport and its subsidiaries (BUD Security Ltd and RÜK Ltd) because their talks concerning the 2025 payrise and other social and economic issues concerning employees were unsuccessful. Based on the joint statement of the different trade unions, they would like a minimum of 10%, HUF 100,000/month (EUR 250) salary increase effective from 1 January. That rate should be 15% in the case of the RÜK Ltd.

Furthermore, they would like a rightful seniority and bonus system, a tutoring allowance for colleagues carrying out education tasks and a Christmas bonus worth the 1-month salary of the employees. Moreover, they would like a bonus, which equals HUF 150,000 (EUR 375) and is paid from the company’s previous year’s profit. In addition, they would like the company management to reduce ergonomic and psychosocial risks and improve working conditions at Budapest Airport, AIRportal wrote.
Negotiations may continue today
Therefore, they initiated talks with the employer for 19 March, which was delayed to 20 March. If the negotiations do not bear fruit, the trade unions have the right to organise a general strike at Budapest Airport. The previous round of the talks ended on 19 February without an agreement.
Stationary bicycles at Budapest Airport
According to Budflyer, a Hungarian air travel news Facebook page, Budapest Airport offers stationary bicycles that generate energy, enabling the passengers to charge their electric devices while pedalling. The bicycles have USB-A and USB-C chargers, and passengers can follow their speed on the display. There are two bicycles at terminals 2A and 2B and Pier 1. The operator would like to provide the experience and opportunity for kids as well, therefore, they are to place three small bicycles soon, which will increase the total number of such devices to nine.

“Traveling in March? Do not miss the wine tasting by the Patricius Winery at the airport,” the airport’s official Facebook page writes. “Enjoy the unique flavours of Tokaji wines, and purchase the Patricius Tokaji 5 Puttonyos Aszú dessert wine with a special discount at Heinemann!”
