UPDATE: Budapest Airport reopens after shutdown, aircraft incident reported, 100E extra transport capacity

Flights have been temporarily suspended at Budapest’s Liszt Ferenc International Airport on Tuesday morning due to freezing rain and extreme icing, Hungarian authorities confirmed.

Budapest Airport suspends flights

According to official information, the Budapest Airport stopped both departures and arrivals at around 10:25 a.m. for safety reasons. The operator, Budapest Airport, later confirmed the suspension on its social media channels.

Transport Minister János Lázár said the decision was taken because of dangerous weather conditions, adding that passengers will be continuously informed via the airport’s official platforms.

Heavy snow and ice since early morning

Snowfall and freezing rain have affected the airport area since early Tuesday, prompting the highest level of winter operations. Airport crews are continuously clearing runways, taxiways, and aprons, but conditions remain hazardous.

  • M. R. Štefánik Airport in Bratislava was closed on Tuesday morning, and Slovak authorities convened an emergency crisis meeting.

Passengers are advised to check directly with their airlines before travelling to the airport, as delays and cancellations are expected across the region.

Liszt Ferenc International Airport reopened at 1:00 PM, both runways are operational, and flights are arriving and departing safely. However, due to adverse weather conditions,

traffic has slowed down and some flights may be delayed or canceled in the coming hours, so we ask our passengers for their patience and understanding.

Snow and freezing rain were observed at the airport and in the surrounding area from early morning until early afternoon on Tuesday, January 13. The airport is currently operating at the highest level of snow preparedness. Budapest Airport teams are working hard to keep the runways, taxiways, and aprons clear.

Budapest Airport is providing continuous updates on the current conditions at the airport. Passengers are requested to follow the airport’s website and the airlines’ announcements for the latest information on their flights.

UPDATE 3

BUD: Some flights may be delayed

According to official reports, Budapest Airport (Liszt Ferenc International Airport) and its surroundings have been experiencing precipitation-free weather since early afternoon. Both runways at the airport are operating normally, and flights are arriving and departing safely.

No significant precipitation is expected for the rest of the day, but due to icing caused by low temperatures, the operator is maintaining continuous de-icing and the runways, taxiways, and aprons are being continuously cleared. Depending on the weather, some flights may be delayed.

Due to the closure of the airport today, a total of 13 arriving and 14 departing flights have been canceled, and 11 flights have been diverted to other airports due to the extreme weather conditions.

UPDATE 4

BKK adjusts public transport services to late-night flight arrivals

According to BKK, due to snow-related disruptions affecting air traffic across Europe, several flights are expected to arrive at Liszt Ferenc International Airport late at night. In response to the extraordinary situation, BKK Centre for Budapest Transport is increasing public transport capacity between the airport and the city to help passengers reach their destinations safely and reliably.

BKK is continuously monitoring air traffic at Budapest Airport and, where necessary, adjusting the timetables of the 100E Airport Express and the 200E bus services in line with passenger demand.

Recent winter weather conditions have caused flight cancellations and delays at several European airports. As a result, a higher-than-usual number of late-night arrivals is expected in Budapest.

To accommodate the increased passenger flow, during the night of 13–14 January 2026, BKK will operate additional services on both airport bus lines, scheduled to match arriving flights. The 100E Airport Express provides a direct connection to the city centre, while the 200E bus connects to the M3 metro line at Kőbánya-Kispest and, after metro operating hours, to night bus services at Határ út.
