Budapest Airport: These routes will NOT cease in the coming weeks

World-class snow fleet guarantees safety at the airport
Every year, the airport must meet the challenges presented for its infrastructure by the winter weather; snow, sleet, black ice and the extreme cold are all circumstances which require immediate measures and maximum preparation. This not only means snow clearance, but also, for example, the surface de-icing of the runways, taxiways and aprons, continuously, 24 hours a day.
The safety of passengers and of aviation is a key priority for the operator. Budapest Airport therefore begins winter preparations even before the snowy season. It is especially important for aircraft taking off and landing that appropriate grip should be available on the concrete. The surface de-icing of the runways, taxiways and aprons is thus an important priority. To ensure safe operation, Budapest Airport has one of the most modern and best equipped snow clearance fleets in Hungary; the 32-strong fleet consists of machines that are not only high-performance, but also spectacular.
However, these top-of-the range vehicles cannot combat the cold weather on their own. Safe and stable operation is ensured by Budapest Airport’s staff; they are the ones who move these gigantic machines. Simulators help the operators during their training, to ensure that they should always find their way around the snowy taxiways. Before live practice on the runways, they familiarize themselves with every corner of the taxiway network in virtual space. The recruitment of snow clearance vehicle operators already commences during the summer; the – by then fully experienced and professional – snow clearance team can be alerted from 1 November until the end of March.
