Major Budapest artery between Elizabeth Bridge and Astoria to be renovated

Plans are on the drawing board to renew and transform the area around the major artery of downtown Budapest’s Kossuth Lajos Street and Szabad Sajtó Road in cooperation between the metropolitan council and Belvaros-Lipotvaros district council, the Mayor’s Office said on Thursday.
This axis had been “ruined” by urban planners in communist times, and now the capital and 5th district municipality want to restore “the old glory” of the area and revitalise one of the capital’s historic thoroughfares as part of a series of investments aiming to reshape the image of Budapest.
Gergely Karácsony, the city’s mayor, formally launched the cooperation between the capital and the 5th district municipality, and noted previous projects of a similar nature on Március 15 Square and Ferenciek Square, among others.

Okay, good; but, for my money, the continuation of the road–Rakoczi ut–all the way to Keleti is is more dire need of renovation and, even more so, regeneration. The entire thing is an absolute pit, further “uglified” by all the boarded-up storefronts, particularly between Kossut Lajos ter and Baross ter.
Ladies in late maternal stage of child bearing, can’t travel on the route referred in Steiner’s comments.
It’s a ROUGH un-pleasant ride, the state of the road, that could contribute to “early” delivery of the “still” in waiting, thousands of new born DNA Hungarians babies.
Money – to invest in such projects – it’s PROVISION ?
It seems that Rakoczi ut will have to wait and descend further into the abyss. The road, including the section proposed for renewal currently functions as an urban motorway, carrying traffic from the M1 to the M3, often used at night by those seeking to avoid the long detour via the M0. It requires capacity constraints and traffic lights timings that serve as a disincentive for those seeking to use the route as a quick transit route.
Ferenciek tere will soon play host to 3 ultra high-end hotels and the state of Szabad Sajto ut up to Astoria is a shocking contrast. This overhaul isn’t before time and has long reflected poorly on the city.
