Budapest from 150m height: balloon viewpoint to open in May! – UPDATED
The new balloon viewpoint of Budapest is going to open in May in the City Park. The fixed balloon will be perfectly safe for everybody. Tourists will be able to experience the unique view it offers of the Hungarian capital on Mimóza Hill.
Unique balloon viewpoint in Budapest
The balloon viewpoint will be established in the framework of the Liget Budapest project. According to the plans, it will be the main attraction of the Great Playground in the City Park. Its colours will resemble the colours of Pál Szinyei Merse’s The balloon, a famous Hungarian painting from 1878. The CEO of Városliget Ltd, Benedek Gyorgyevics, added that
they would like to revive a 120-year-old tradition in the City Park.
A balloon viewpoint was the main attraction of the millennium exhibition in 1896 – Helló Magyar reported.
Here is what the new balloon will probably look like:
Mr Gyorgyevics added that the designer of the City Park, Heinrich Nebbien, planned to place a balloon viewpoint on the Mimóza Hill. If the weather is fine, the red-white balloon will reach even 150 metres in height, offering a unique 360° view of the Hungarian capital.
The CEO said that such attractions are found in several places in the world. These include, for example, the Disneyland in Paris, the Safari Park in San Diego and Angkor Wat.
However, the balloon in Budapest will be unique in Central Europe.
The environment is also renewed
Eric Bachelier, the project manager of Aérophile responsible for building the balloon’s structure, said that they would start filling it with helium on Tuesday. The 6,000 cubic metres balloon can carry 30 people on less windy days. He said they strictly followed all the rules of the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) to provide a safe attraction for everybody. Moreover, the balloon will go up only if the weather is suitable.
Mr Gyorgyevics said that they renewed the environment around the balloon. They recreated 10 thousand square metres of green space, including roads. Furthermore, they installed new street furniture and bins. They dismantled the outdated beer spot and created a café and a restroom in its former place.
The new viewpoint will be run by the Ballon kilátó Zrt. for 10+5 years which won the relevant tender in 2020.
