Looking for one last drink/dance/bite? Depending on where you are in the world, you may or may not be able to go out all night and into the early morning hours. A city that is referred to as “the city that never sleeps” is New York City. But is it really?
To answer this question, SimpleGhar took a look at the average closing times of bars, clubs, cafés, and restaurants for a list of key cities around the globe. Here’s a preview of the ranking for the top 15 cities overall:

New York City might be widely regarded as the city that never sleeps, but if you look at the closing times of its establishments, it’s only in 10th in our rankings of sleepless cities. In number one spot, it’s Cairo, Egypt, where restaurants close at 23:35, cafés at 00:26 and bars & clubs keep going until 03:00. In places 2 through 4 are cities in the South of Europe and around the Mediterranean: Athens in Greece, Belgrade in Serbia, and Istanbul in Turkey, all of which have remarkably late closing hours. In Athens, bars & clubs stay open until 02:26, in Belgrade, cafés close at 23:23, and in Istanbul, restaurants close at 23:16. Dubai in UAE – a city known for its shopping and entertainment opportunities – is in 5th spot.

Lower in the top 10 are Russia’s capital Moscow, Karachi in Pakistan, and Havana in Cuba. Two global cities famous for their bar and restaurant scene Hong Kong and New York round off the top 10.
Findings by type of establishment
The two cities where bars and clubs stay open the longest are in the Americas. In Miami, Florida – a city famed for its beaches and beach parties – they stay open to 03:41am. In second place is Montevideo in Uruguay, where nightlife venues stay open until 03:26 am.
