Budapest parking rules changed drastically from today – details here

Good news for the motorists: from today until early January, they will not have to pay for parking in Budapest. However, there are some exceptions in the downtown worth mentioning before you bump into your car for a little sightseeing in the capital. Below you may find the details.

Here are the exceptions

According to hvg.hu, you will not have to pay for parking in Budapest between 24 December and 1 January. The only exceptions are in the heart of the city, in the Buda Castle district.

The press office of Budapest said on the question of the Hungarian news outlet that the rules of parking in Budapest will not change during the festivities. That means the municipal council’s latest parking decree will be in effect from today. The document clears that we do not have to pay a parking fee from the service start in 24 December until the service end in 1 January.

However, there are a few exceptions listed in an attachment of the decree. Those are the following:

In the 1st district (Buda castle and its vicinity), the entire Dísz Square (the first square when we enter the Buda Castle), a segment between the Szabó Ilonka Street and the Dísz Square of the Hunyadi János Road. Furthermore, we will have to pay on a segment of Palota Road between the Dísz Square and the Lovas Street.

Moreover, we have to pay on the Margaret island in the big Northern parking lot and the parking spaces of the hotels.

Budapest parking system changed drastically this year

As we reported earlier, the parking system of Budapest was altered this September. The city council defined four zones instead of the 27 before and increased the parking fee significantly.

The hourly rate for parking in zone A was raised to HUF 600 between 8am and 10pm. Parking in zone B costs HUF 450 per hour, to be paid between 8am and 8pm, in zone C the hourly rate is HUF 300, while in zone D HUF 200, payable between 8am and 6pm. The maximum allowed parking time in zones A, B and C is 3 hours. Meanwhile, the total size of parking zones in the city was increased by around 10 percent.
