Budapest Pride 2025: Mayor Karácsony vows celebration of love and freedom despite challenges
Preparations are under way for the 30th Budapest Pride, Budapest Mayor Gergely Karácsony said on Friday, adding that “it is evident that there will be Pride in Budapest this year also”.
Karácsony said on Facebook that “it is just as evident as the love between two people”, adding that “in this city, nobody will suffer a disadvantage as a result of what they believe in, where they were born, or who they love”.
He said it was a recurring phenomenon that whenever the country was facing more trouble, “the smear campaigns and acts of discrediting by those in power are getting stronger”.
“No matter what anybody says, the celebration of joy, love and freedom, in other words Pride, will be again held in June in Budapest, a free city proud of its diversity,” he said. “Perhaps it will be greater than ever before,” he added.

The Hungarian people are now in a struggle for their freedom from incrementally increasing oppression by the Fidesz dictatorship which makes a successful Pride parade more important than ever. If Fidesz bans the Pride parade it will be a major step in the shut down of public free expression. We are going to start to see political prisoners arrested under false pretences and oppressive laws. It will inevitably come as Fidesz obsesses with hanging onto power and seeks to shut down any opposition.
Cancelling Pride Parade has nothing to do with freedom. Larry, 364 days of the year the population is required to act with discretion and dress properly on public thoroughfares. Pride parade break all rules of civilization by parading half naked and carousing (to put it politely) in public. The behavior of Pride Parade members is uncivilized and unacceptable. Yes, I am a prude, my family lived in England during the time of Queen Victoria.
