Attention: Budapest public transport fares to increase from 1 June

Change language:

Budapest residents and visitors will soon pay more for public transport, as the Budapest Transport Centre (BKK) has announced fare increases effective 1 June 2025. The decision, approved by the City Assembly in March, comes amid a weakening forint and the need to fund future transport developments.

What are the new fares?

Several ticket types will see price hikes:

  • Single ticket: Rising from HUF 450 to HUF 500 (to EUR 1.24)
  • Block of ten tickets: From HUF 4,000 to HUF 4,500 (EUR 11.15)
  • 30-minute ticket: From HUF 530 to HUF 600 (EUR 1.5)
  • 90-minute ticket: From HUF 750 to HUF 850 (EUR 2.1)
  • 24-hour Budapest ticket: From HUF 2,500 to HUF 2,750 (EUR 6.8)
  • On-board purchase: Tickets bought from drivers will now cost HUF 700 (EUR 1.73), up from HUF 600

A full list of affected products is available on the BKK website.

Why the increase?

BKK cites two main reasons for the fare adjustment:

  1. The devaluation of the Hungarian forint, which has increased operational costs.
  2. There is a need for resources to support ongoing and future improvements to the capital’s transport network.

Importantly, BKK points out that the fare increase is below the current rate of inflation. After June, a single ticket in Budapest will cost the same as in Debrecen, a city with a much smaller transport network.
