Budapest to open new transit zone for migrants at former market site
Budapest (MTI) – The Budapest city council will open a new transit zone for migrants near the Puskas Ferenc Stadium, at the site of a former market, the city mayor said on Wednesday.
Istvan Tarlos told public news channel M1 that existing transit zones operating at three of the city’s railway stations will not be closed right away and the one at Nyugati station will be open the longest, “it will be kept in reserve”. The move of the Deli and Keleti migrant zones to the new location near the stadium is planned to be completed in about two weeks, he added.
The new zone will be located opposite the Puskas Ferenc Stadium, in an area without residential buildings. The reason for not choosing a site further away from Budapest’s railway stations is because it is still hoped that the migrants could be “encouraged to leave”, Tarlos said.
The new site is just behind Keleti railway station.
