Parliament voted on Monday to empower the government to prolong by 180 days the state of emergency in connection with the war in Ukraine.

The motion passed with 130 votes in favour, while 49 MPs voted against changing the law on rules to be applied in case of war in a neighbouring country as well as in the case of humanitarian disasters.
According to the law, an extended state of emergency is needed to handle the humanitarian catastrophe caused by the Ukraine war and tackle the economic consequences.

Italian geography book excludes Hungary: here’s what happened

hungary italy

The authors of an Italian geography book for fourth graders forgot about Hungary.

Italy is not that far away from Hungary. Yet, it seems that they forgot to include our country, which is more than 1000 years old, in the geography textbook of a rather innovative series of textbooks called Noi Supereroi 2030. Even if we look for Hungary on page 23, it is clear that it has been forgotten, writes gyerekszoba.hu.

Romania has taken Hungary’s place

According to the colour chart in the textbook, the country that shares borders with Austria, Slovenia, Croatia and Serbia is not Hungary but Romania.

Those who noticed the mistake reported to the geography teacher, who was also surprised and promised to correct the error in her class.

The problem was also reported to Lisciani Scuola, the publisher of the textbook, who has not yet commented.

Murder in Budapest: Suspect caught just 9 hours later – UPDATE: Identity of victim revealed

Hungarian police car murder

Police apprehended an 18-year-old man less than nine hours after he allegedly murdered the 51-year-old mother of his ex-girlfriend in Budapest’s 2nd district, as reported by the police through an official statement.

According to initial reports, on 2 November 2024, at around 6:50 PM, the young man attacked his former girlfriend’s mother. Emergency responders arrived promptly and attempted to resuscitate the middle-aged woman; however, their efforts were unsuccessful, and she tragically succumbed to her injuries. The attacker fled the scene immediately afterwards, police.hu reports.

Detectives from the Budapest Police Headquarters (BRFK) quickly identified the suspect, Tamás Sz., and launched a manhunt. Based on the gathered information, law enforcement issued a warrant, and just before 4 AM on 3 November, officers from the Kistelek Police Department located and apprehended Tamás Sz. at the Kistelek bus station.

He was subsequently taken to the Budapest Police Headquarters, where the Life Protection Division (Életvédelmi Osztály) is leading the investigation on suspicion of murder. Authorities are currently processing the suspect.

UPDATE: Identity of the victim revealed

RTL’s former head of communications, the well-known television expert Zsuzsa Révész, was the one killed yesterday, in the attack reported by Daily News Hungary this morning.

“RTL Hungary was saddened to learn of the death of our former colleague Zsuzsa Révész, who managed the company’s marketing communications activities for many years. We share the family’s grief. We will cherish her memory,” the company said on its Facebook page.

Tristan Azbej, the state secretary who heads the government’s Hungary Helps programme, said the government was “shaken” to learn of the disaster in Valencia, where flash floods have killed at least 200 and “the damage is very hard to estimate”. “We hope to contribute towards saving lives and mitigating the damage. Hungary surpasses gas storage target, reaches 90% capacity ahead of EU deadline

Natural Gas Energy Supply

Gas volume in Hungary’s storage facilities is above the target level of 90 percent, the energy ministry said on Friday.

The 6 billion cubic metres of gas currently stored in Hungary’s facilities is twice the total amount Hungarian households used last year, it added.

According to European Union targets, Hungary was required to fill its reserves to 90 percent of capacity by November 1, a threshold the country reached by early autumn, the ministry said.

Hungary has also managed to cut gas consumption by one-fifth in two consecutive years, compared with the average of the previous five years. Annual consumption is expected to remain below 8 billion cubic metres in 2024, the ministry said.

Fidesz confident they will win Hungarian elections in 2026

Secretary Hungary Slovakia fidesz brussels

The communications director of the Fidesz-Christian Democrats said on Wednesday that polling showed the ruling alliance ahead of its main rival “by a large margin”, and this level of support would be replicated in the 2026 general election.

In a video message on Facebook, Tamás Menczer vowed that Fidesz would protect the values underpinning peace and security and launch an economic programme that would have a “positive and tangible” effect on the everyday lives of Hungarians. He listed affordable housing, loans and subsidies, opportunities for small and medium-sized entrepreneurs, favourable financing for employees and wage increases as key government policies.

Menczer said it was realistic to expect 2025 to turn out to be “exceptionally good”. “We will protect our achievements: one million jobs, the tax exemption for young people and the 13th month pension, family support … and we will double the tax relief…” he said.

National Bank of Hungary marks 75 years of Hungarian-Chinese relations with commemorative coin and book

hungary china relations 75th anniversary book coin national bank

The National Bank of Hungary (NBH) commemorated the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Hungary and the People’s Republic of China by presenting a coin set issued by the bank for the occasion and a book titled The 75th Anniversary of Hungarian-Chinese Financial Relations, the NBH said on Tuesday.

Central bank governor György Matolcsy praised the continuous development of Hungarian-Chinese financial relations, the NBH said. Amid geopolitical challenges, key states such as Hungary are becoming more and more important and can offer a platform for cooperation between West and East, he added.

Ambassador Gong Tao thanked the NBH and Matolcsy for promoting bilateral relations. In the past 75 years, Hungary and China have worked actively to elevate relations to an unprecedented level, the statement said.

Hungarian justice minister: Strengthening Western Balkans cooperation crucial for Europe’s security

Bence Tuzson EU Western Balkans

Cooperation with partners in the Western Balkans is vital to Europe’s security and competitiveness, Bence Tuzson, the justice minister, said at a meeting of his peers from the European Union and the Western Balkans in Montenegro on Tuesday.

Tuzson highlighted the EU’s commitment to pursue “a merit-based enlargement policy” in the region and welcomed “serious progress” taken recently in the accession process of some countries such as Albania and Montenegro. He said the start of accession talks with Albania was “a very big achievement”, adding that four crucial chapters of the process have been concluded with Montenegro.

Closing as many issues as possible with candidates is a commitment taken by the Hungarian EU presidency, Tuzson said. “It is not an easy process… It is difficult to make decisions while it is important to both retain your identity and meet the EU’s requirements,” he said.
