Miracle in Vienna: Hungary’s women’s handball team won bronze! – PHOTOS, VIDEO

Hungary won 25-24 against world champion and Olympic silver winner France in today’s match for the bronze at the 2024 EURO Women’s Handball Championship. The last time a Hungarian women’s handball team could secure a medal was 12 years ago.

The victory did not come out of the blue since the Hungarian team could defeat the French in Toulon on 24 October in a friendly match (30-27). That was the first time after 14 years that the Hungarian team overcame the French. Thankfully, the “new trend” continued today.

Hungary is considered to be a successful nation in women’s handball. We already won the world championships once and the EHF EURO title 14 years ago. Moreover, the Hungarian team bagged altogether 16 medals. Hungary’s team raised the trophy in 2000, joining the club of only five nations that have won the Women’s EHF EURO.

Norway could only defeat Hungary in the semi-final after key goalkeeper Szemerey was sidelined with a minor injury. Thankfully, she could return for today’s match.

Match highlights

The official website of the competition highlighted the following from the bronze match:

“The goalkeepers stood out in the first half in particular, with France’s Laura Glauser and Hungary’s Zsófi Szemerey saving at over 40 per cent in that period; while Glauser came off with 11 saves at 35 per cent for Hatadou Sako at the 50-minute mark, Szemerey counted 13 stops and was key in crunch time.

France opened the first two-goal distance of the game at 5:3 just past the 10-minute mark, before Hungary took the upper hand, always scoring first or leading, from the end of the first quarter of the match until the final buzzer.

With an assist from EHF EURO 2024 All-star Team right back Klujber to a goal from All-star right wing Gyori-Lukács, Hungary created the first three-goal scoreline at 10:7 in the 25th minute, but France came back for a difference of one at half-time.

Hungary again created a temporary three-goal advantage early in the second half and kept the edge as a thrilling match unfolded, but when the final 10 minutes began, it was still anyone’s game at 20:20.

Klujber’s nine goals took her overall tally at the EHF EURO 2024 to 60, seeming to cement her place in first on the top scorer list — but the individual title can only be confirmed beyond doubt after the final between Norway and Denmark.”

Here is a highlights video:

“It’s almost impossible to describe how I feel right now. This is the best Christmas present I have ever gotten. And I’m so proud of our team. We work really hard and today we went and fought from the first second to the last one. I think that the key was our team spirit”, Petra Vámos, Hungary’s centre-back, told the press after the bronze match.

Here’s Hungary’s road to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA: can we do it?

It was at FIFA’s Zürich headquarters on Friday that Hungary Men were drawn from the second pot of seeds to contest European Qualifying Group F, one which will feature two familiar opponents and one less so. Here’s Hungary’s road to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA. Will we be able to qualify? And will President Trump attend our matches with Orbán?

Hungary’s road to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico will start in a four-team European Qualifying group including the winners of the Portugal vs Denmark Nations League play-off tie, as well as familiar recent opponent Republic of Ireland and intriguingly, Armenia, whom Hungary have faced just once in the past, a 2004 friendly in Greece, mlsz.hu wrote.

That fixture came during German World Cup winner Lothar Matthäus‘s reign as Hungary head coach, his largely experimental side winning 2-0 during a winter training camp. Republic of ireland are a much more well-known opponent, Marco Rossi’s squad having faced them twice in friendlies in recent years, a warm-up match held in Újpest prior to the delayed Euro 2020 tournament in June 2021 which ended goalless (as did a previous friendly fixture prior to Euro 2012) being followed by another friendly earlier this year when the Irish triumphed 2-1.

The group’s top seeds, the winner of March 2025’s Nations League play-off between Portugal and Denmark, are also very recognisable to Hungarian fans, and not just because they possess world stars such as Cristiano Ronaldo for the former and Christian Eriksen for the latter. Both nations were drawn in the same 2010 World Cup qualifying group as Hungary, two losses against Portugal proving costly as Hungary failed to reached the tournament finals despite a home draw and away victory against Denmark.

Hungary and Portugal have also met in recent EUROs, a pulsating 3-3 draw in 2016 resulting in Hungary’s confirmation as group-stage winners in France, while Portugal gained a measure of revenge by overcoming Hungary 3-0 in Budapest in the 2021 group phase.

Fixture venues, dates and times for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign will be confirmed in due course.

Here are the matches:

  • 6 September (Saturday), 8:45 PM: Ireland-Hungary
  • 9 September (Tuesday), 8:45 PM: Hungary-Portugal/Denmark
  • 11 October (Saturday), 6 PM: Hungary-Armenia
  • 14 October (Tuesday), 8:45 PM: Portugal/Denmark-Hungary
  • 13 November (Thursday), 6 PM: Armenia-Hungary
  • 16 November (Sunday), 3 PM: Hungary-Ireland

Marco Rossi: There is no easy opponent

Hungary Men’s World Cup qualifying opponent from the first pot of seeds, either Portugal or Denmark, will definitely be a tough proposition, according to head coach Marco Rossi, but he’s emphasised there are no easy opponents in international football nowadays anyway.

As well as the winner of the Nations League play-off tie between Portugal or Denmark, European Qualifying Group F will pit Hungary against Republic of Ireland and Armenia during 2025 as Europe’s national teams strive to reach the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico.

“I counted on us getting an extremely strong team from the first pot of seeds, which may well turn out to be Portugal. We know them and are aware of their strength, so while we won’t be the favourites to win, we’ll try to do our best,” Rossi explained. “As for the others, we’ve recently experienced the difficulties of playing against Republic of Ireland. We’re talking about a physically tough team, but as we also know, it’s not easy against anyone away from home, even if the Irish and Armenian national teams may not quite represent the same level as that of the very top nations. Every match will be in the balance – f course it’s important that we’re ahead in the world rankings, but we have to produce our best possible performance in order to prove it on the pitch and overcome these opponents.”

Of the two possible opponents from the first pot of seeds, Rossi has already managed Hungary in a match against Portugal, a 3-0 loss in the group stage of the European Championship in the Puskás Arena in 2021.

“The Portuguese national team has changed a lot since our last match against each other. Several players have been replaced, but we’re still talking about a top team with excellent footballers in every position. In addition, they have Cristiano Ronaldo who is very difficult to stop and is effective not only in Saudi Arabia, but also against the biggest nations for his national team,” Rossi continued, after which he answered the question of which of these two possible opponents he’d choose as an opponent in terms of playing style. “We’re talking about two teams with different styles. The Danes play classic Scandinavian football; they’re physically strong, well organised and also tactically and technically well prepared. They have several excellent players, but I think Portugal are stronger. Therefore, if I had to choose, I would choose Denmark, because Portugal is an even better team than them. Of course, this doesn’t mean we’d have an easy time against Denmark, but knowing their style, we’d have more of a chance against them. However, Portugal’s loss against Georgia meant we were eliminated at this year’s European Championship, so if we’d get them, I’d be happy that we’ll have the opportunity to gain a measure of revenge.”

Willi Orbán vows to help RB Leipzig achieve ‘full potential’ after below-par start to the season

RB Leipzig have, slowly but surely, become one of the most consistent teams in the German Bundesliga and the Champions League.

But the Red Bull franchise hasn’t quite been at the races in 2024/25 so far… leaving their Hungarian ace and club captain, Willi Orbán, at a loss to explain their low-key start to the campaign.

However, the 32-year-old has vowed to do all he can to help the club unlock its ‘full potential’, and his performances so far this term confirm he’s leading from the front heading into a crucial chapter of the season.

Crisis on the Continental Front

One of the main casualties of RB Leipzig’s sluggish start has been their results in the revamped Champions League.

They lost all of their opening five games in the competition, leaving them trailing in the Champions League betting market to the likes of Liverpool (+450), Manchester City (+550), and Arsenal (+550).

Indeed, Champions League winner odds of +25000 suggest that Leipzig’s hopes of advancing in the continental showpiece are all but over.

And so attention will turn to domestic matters, where Die Rotten Bullen have their eyes fixed on another top-four finish… or better.

After 13 rounds of action, Leipzig find themselves in fourth place, albeit nine points behind the leaders Bayern Munich. However, a win – and other results going their way – could see Orbán and co leap as high as second in the table, which is more in-line with their ambitions.

However, the Expected Points table – which subtracts Expected Goals (xG) yielded from xG created – shows Leipzig’s ‘true’ position, based upon their performances, as a lowly ninth in the Bundesliga.

At least in Orbán they have a captain leading from the front…

Captain Fantastic

Increasingly these days in modern football, central defenders are athletic ball-players with an eye for a pass.

But that genre of player can sometimes struggle with the physicality of defending, which is why centre backs like the Hungarian are still worth their weight in gold.

Orbán prides himself on doing the ‘dirty work’ of defending, from making last-ditch tackles and blocks, to putting his head in where it hurts. No wonder his Leipzig teammates consider him to be such an inspirational leader.

After 13 rounds of Bundesliga games, Orbán ranks third amongst the division’s players for aerial duels won, third for successful blocks, and fifth for clearances made. He is, statistically speaking, the best defender in German football right now.

The powerhouse is also a handful in the opposition’s penalty area at set pieces, scoring four times in the Bundesliga so far this term.

But the Leipzig captain appreciates that there’s more work to be done, and while he was feeling bullish after his side’s 2-0 victory over Holstein Kiel early in December, Orbán confirmed that he and his teammates still had higher levels to strive for.

“We didn’t manage to play to our full potential in November, both as a team and as individual players,” he said.

But the belief is still there… and why wouldn’t it be, with Orbán leading from the front.

Dominik Szoboszlai and Liverpool: a promising season ahead

As Liverpool embarks on the 2024 season, the spotlight is firmly on Dominik Szoboszlai, the Hungarian midfielder who joined the club in a high-profile transfer from RB Leipzig for approximately £60 million. Szoboszlai’s integration into Liverpool’s dynamic midfield has reinforced the team’s competitive edge and sparked optimism among fans and analysts alike regarding a successful season.

Szoboszlai’s Role and Contributions

Szoboszlai, who has consistently demonstrated his potential as a playmaker, has been pivotal in Liverpool’s early successes this season. Despite facing some criticism for his goal-scoring output—having netted only once in the Champions League against AC Milan—he emphasizes his commitment to the team’s overall performance rather than individual statistics. He remarked, “If we are top of the league and I don’t score goals, that’s the most important for me”. This mentality reflects a mature understanding of his role within the squad, focusing on contributing defensively and creatively.

His ability to create scoring opportunities is noteworthy; last season at Leipzig, he led in several key metrics, including involvement in shot-ending sequences and creating secondary chances. This season under manager Arne Slot, Szoboszlai’s shooting approach has evolved. He is now taking fewer long-range shots but focusing on higher-quality chances closer to goal, which aligns with Liverpool’s tactical shift towards more sustainable scoring methods.

Tactical Evolution Under Arne Slot

Liverpool’s tactical framework has undergone significant changes since Slot’s appointment. The team is now more patient in possession, waiting for optimal moments to attack rather than relying on quick strikes from distance. This strategic evolution has allowed Szoboszlai to thrive as a second striker, utilizing his physicality and intelligence to find space and support offensive plays. His development in this role is expected to yield more goals as he adapts to the demands of playing closer to the opposition’s goal.

Team Performance and Prospects

Liverpool currently sits at the top of the Premier League table, showcasing a strong start to the season with six points from their initial Champions League matches and a recent victory over Chelsea. The team’s resilience and fighting spirit have been evident, particularly in high-stakes matches against top-tier opponents. Slot noted that while results have been positive, there remains room for improvement in their overall gameplay.

The integration of Szoboszlai into this competitive environment has not only enhanced Liverpool’s midfield depth but also provided a fresh attacking dimension. His work ethic off the ball complements Liverpool’s pressing style, making him an invaluable asset as they aim for silverware this season.

Conclusion

As Liverpool progresses through the season, Dominik Szoboszlai stands out as a key figure whose contributions extend beyond mere statistics. His adaptability and commitment to team success align perfectly with Liverpool’s ambitions. With continued development and tactical refinement under Slot, Szoboszlai is poised to make significant impacts both in terms of goals and assists as the season unfolds. The combination of his talent and Liverpool’s current form suggests that this could indeed be a memorable season for both player and club.

For the first time in 12 years: the Hungarian handball team plays in the semi-finals of the European Championship

Hungary’s women’s handball team has made a significant achievement by securing a spot in the semi-finals of the 2024 Women’s EHF EURO Championship, marking their first appearance in this stage of the tournament in 12 years.

This milestone was reached following a decisive 37-29 victory over Romania on December 8, 2024, which solidified their position after winning all six matches in the tournament thus far.

The Hungarian team showcased strong performances throughout the competition, including earlier victories against Sweden (32-25) and North Macedonia (29-19), demonstrating their dominance in the group stage.

Their consistent play has been attributed to effective teamwork and strategic adjustments made by coach Vladimir Golovin, who emphasized the importance of maintaining composure and focus during matches. Golovin said to EHF: “We are really happy that after the sixth game in this tournament we already know that we are in the semi-finals. We worked a lot, really hard, in the past few years, and we are really proud of the team and of the girls. Of course, we would like to thank the fans because the atmosphere was fantastic tonight and they pushed us.”

After the qualification, the national captain told NSO:

“It’s the same game as the others. Everyone knows what their job is, nothing is given for free to anyone, if we want something we have to get it. External factors obviously influence the team, but the main thing is that in those forty times twenty metres up on the pitch everyone just concentrates on what they have to do and we have managed to do that not only now but in all the matches so far. They know what they want, what they have to do to achieve it. Of course, you can’t always succeed, it’s not a machine, it’s not players, it’s people, but they keep supporting each other whatever happens. Nothing works without concentration, and we need that in the next game, and then the next one. France is the next task, the girls will get the video footage of them late at night, they will watch it in the morning and study it. On Monday afternoon we have a training session, we do video, we prepare as we have done so far, but we only deal with the French. I know that everyone is calculating who from the other semi-final group will make it to the semi-finals, but nothing is certain at the moment, it might only be the last round on Wednesday that decides whether it’s Denmark or Norway, but we’re not looking that far ahead.”

As they prepare for the semi-finals, Hungary will face Montenegro in Debrecen. The team has expressed gratitude to their fans for their support and looks forward to continuing their successful run in the championship.

Infuriating: US university bans Olympic bronze medallist Dávid Betlehem and 5th Betti Fábián from training

Dávid Betlehem and Betti Fábián

Dávid Betlehem won bronze at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games in the men’s 10 km swimming marathon while his teammate, Kristóf Rasovszky, secured the gold medal for the Hungarian team. Everybody talked about a miracle, and Betlehem continued his career as an athlete and a freshman at North Carolina State University with his girlfriend, Olympic 5th Betti Fábián. However, the university did not support their swimming marathon training and, ultimately, even banned Betlehem and Fábián from training.

Dávid Betlehem and Betti Fábián stopped by American university

According to 444, Dávid Betlehem and Betti Fábián are to move home after a short stay in the USA as freshmen at the North Carolina State University. The university proudly presents both on its website, writing that Betlehem won bronze while Fábián finished 5th at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games in the 10 km marathon swim. However, the institution did not support their training in that swimming stroke. Hungarian media did not report the university’s reasons.

444 wrote that the university would have supported their training in pool strokes and university competitions instead of world championships in the 10 km marathon. As a result, they decided to come home.

Interestingly, the university banned them from attending training on campus. Consequently, Betlehem could not prepare for the World Aquatics Swimming Championships (25m) in Budapest starting next Tuesday, so he will not compete.

They shared the following statement this morning:

“First of all, we’d like to thank the opportunity to NC State for including us to their great team. We really enjoyed our time there and we are truly grateful for being part of the family and, even more importantly, being treated as member of the NC State family. It was a tremendous experience for both of us, however, we had to recognise that with open water swimming in our focus, it’s better to return home and prepare for the coming challenges in Hungary as we did before the Olympics.

While taking this sad decision, we also ask everyone to accept this – and to avoid generating any conflicts as our story is about gaining experience, learning lessons and finding the way to give our best efforts. We learnt a lesson and acted accordingly.

We are sorry to leave NC State, and again, our hearts are filled with love when we remember of the past months spent there.”

She disinfected with pálinka after swimming in the Seine

As you may recall, Betti Fábián and her fellow swimmers were the first to swim in the Seine at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Before, authorities ran several tests concerning the water quality and found it acceptable only last minute. It went viral that Betti disinfected with pálinka, the traditional Hungarian spirit. Then she drank Coca-Cola. Even so, the 19-year-old swimmer became hospitalised after experiencing nausea and a fever.

We hope that both athletes will find their new homes to train, prepare for future competitions and make us all proud again.

Both swimmers were thankful for the opportunity to prepare in the Danube before the Paris Olympics. They mentioned that as a deciding factor in their success. The water quality of the river is already much better than that of the Seine. Consequently, the Danube could host several swimming competitions at a possible Budapest Olympics. There is a chance now for that since both the government and Mayor Karácsony seem to support the idea and many facilities are ready for the event, including the National Athletics Centre recently opened to the general public.

National Athletics Centre in Budapest

The National Athletics Centre, renowned as the host venue of the 2023 Budapest World Athletics Championships, is now open to the public, and poised to become a dynamic centre for sports and community life. Locals now enjoy the panoramic running track overlooking the Danube, extensive outdoor fitness facilities, and tranquil spaces for relaxation for free.

National Athletics Centre becomes open to the public

As Telex writes, the National Athletics Centre, the prestigious venue of the 2023 Budapest World Athletics Championships in District 9, officially opened to the public on Sunday. Accessible daily from 7 am to 9 pm, the facility offers a premier space for sports enthusiasts. While winter may not typically favour outdoor activities, the State Secretariat for Sport anticipates the venue will flourish as a hub for community and sports programmes come spring, establishing itself as a vibrant centre for athletics in the heart of the capital. Ádám Schmidt added:

Even before the 2023 World Athletics Championships, we stressed that it is important to ensure that the event has a long-term positive impact on both community and competitive sport in Hungary. One of the most important legacies of the World Championships will be the National Athletics Centre, which will host the new elite athletics series, the World Championships, in 2026, and which we have designed in the spirit of being the new stronghold of community sport.

Delayed works

Krisztina Baranyi, mayor of Budapest’s District 9, emphasised that the district supported the construction of the National Athletics Centre on the condition that it would be accessible to the public for recreational sports after the 2023 World Athletics Championships. Following the event, the stadium’s temporary stands were removed, and the surrounding park underwent renovations. Although initially slated for completion by the end of August, delays caused partly by flooding meant the park was only handed over on 1 December.

Diverse sporting opportunities

The National Athletics Centre offers a panoramic running track on the stadium’s upper level, providing stunning views of the Danube and the city. The surrounding “stadium park” features a variety of outdoor sports facilities, including a playground, a fitness park with street workout equipment, and accessible gear for beginners and older athletes. For experienced enthusiasts, there are bouldering walls and a skate park accommodating skateboards, roller skates, scooters, and BMX bikes, with safety gear required. The Danube bank adds a relaxing touch with a sandy lawn and sun loungers, making the venue a versatile hub for fitness and leisure.

Historic moment permanent Puskás Museum opens its doors in Budapest

The myth of Hungary’s legendary Golden Team will continue, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said on Monday, adding that successors of Ferenc Puskás and his team-mates must be capable of following their example.

The opening ceremony included speeches by Mária Schmidt, Director General of the House of Terror Museum and Chief Curator of the Puskás Museum, Emilio Butragueno, former Real Madrid star and current International Director, Sándor Csányi, President of the Hungarian Football Association (MLSZ), and video messages from Gianni Infantino, the head of the International Football Federation (FIFA) and the European Football Association (UEFA), and Aleksander Ceferin.

Orbán: We rebuilt the Hungarian football

Addressing the opening of a Puskás Museum in Budapest, Orbán said that 15 years ago, when his government began its efforts “to rebuild Hungarian football, “the favorite sport of the world and of Hungarians was “in ruins in Hungary.” “It was unbelievable that in fifty years, Hungary had nearly disappeared from the map in an area where it had been among the world’s best,” Orbán said.

“Russians back home, long live Hungarian freedom, go Hungary, go Hungarians!”

– Orbán quoted the former slogan, stressing that while communism is essentially internationalist, football is national.

Thanks to Puskás, Hungary has been aware of the Golden Team myth, Orbán said.

“When we founded a football academy and named it after him, or built a stadium … we continued to see world championships and champions’ league finals, stunning goals and beating Britain, Germany, or Brazil …,” he said.

The Puskás Museum, “a worthy memorial” dedicated to the legendary football player, has been set up within Budapest’s Puskás Stadium as a completion of the facility, Orbán said.

The relationship between Real Madrid and Ferenc Puskás is eternal

Emilio Butragueno, Real Madrid International Director, said that Ferenc Puskás was one of the most outstanding figures of Real Madrid, as he was part of the legendary team that, together with Alfredo Di Stefano and Paco Gento, under the leadership of President Santiago Bernabéu, changed the history of Real Madrid and world football forever.

According to Butragueno, the Real Madrid community remembers Ferenc Puskás not only as a footballer who achieved extraordinary results wearing the club crest and shirt but also as a man who represented values that captured the hearts of all Madridites. These include hard work, self-sacrifice, team spirit, respect, camaraderie, and humility, all of which are paramount for Real Madrid,” he added.

The International Director stressed that the entire Real Madrid community takes special pride in the museum, which also serves to transmit the values above. He concluded by saying that they are also grateful to Ferenc Puskás for his great role in the fact that so many people in Hungary are also fans of Real Madrid.

“This relationship between Real Madrid and Ferenc Puskás is eternal,” he concluded.

Video messages from UEFA and FIFA

A video message from Aleksander Ceferin, President of the European Football Association (UEFA), and Gianni Infantino, President of FIFA, was played at the opening ceremony. Both paid tribute to Ferenc Puskás, highlighting his significant role in European and world football. The latter called the exhibition beautiful and world-class.

UEFA Nations League: Hungary levels the score against Germany in 99th minute

In a gripping UEFA Nations League clash, Hungary staged a remarkable comeback to secure a 1-1 draw against Germany. After Felix Nmecha put the visitors ahead in the second half, Dominik Szoboszlai converted a last-minute penalty to level the score. The game was marked by a heartfelt gesture from German captain Julian Nagelsmann towards Hungary’s assistant coach, Ádám Szalai, who is recovering from a recent health scare.

Thrilling UEFA Nations League clash

In a tense encounter during the UEFA Nations League, Germany dominated the early stages against Hungary, showcasing a series of dangerous attacks, summarises M4 sport. Despite their control, the Hungarian defence held firm, limiting Germany’s chances. However, Hungary broke the deadlock after 15 minutes, with Nübel making crucial saves to deny Schäfer and Nagy. As the first half progressed, Germany regained control but struggled to convert their opportunities, while Hungary’s counter-attacks proved more effective, culminating in a thrilling match where both teams displayed resilience.

The second half saw an increase in intensity as both sides penetrated the midfield with dangerous plays. Germany made significant substitutions, introducing top talents like Musiala and Havertz, who nearly scored immediately. Yet, Hungary continued to push, with Szoboszlai’s corner kick almost ending up in the net. Just when it seemed that Germany would secure victory with Nmecha’s goal, Hungary fought back valiantly. In a dramatic finish, Szoboszlai converted a penalty for handball in the dying moments, ensuring a hard-fought draw for Hungary as they look ahead to their next UEFA Nations League match in March against a Division B opponent.

You can watch the last thrilling minutes of the match and the goal scored by Szoboszlai HERE.

Thoughtful gift for Szalai

Telex writes that moments before the UEFA Nations League clash between Hungary and Germany, German national team captain Julian Nagelsmann presented Marco Rossi with a jersey bearing the words “Jobbulást, Ádám!” in Hungarian (meaning “Get well soon, Ádám!”). Ádám Szalai, who served as an assistant coach for Hungary, collapsed during Saturday’s match against the Netherlands and was subsequently hospitalised. Thankfully, he is now in stable condition and recovering at home with his family. Due to medical advice, Szalai was unable to attend the match against Germany at the Puskás Aréna.

Netherlands szalai defeated Hungary, Hungarian former player, coach Szalai almost died

An unfortunate but ultimately comprehensive defeat in Amsterdam on Saturday evening means Hungary will finish third in their group and contest a play-off tie in March for the right to play in League A next time. Meanwhile, Ádám Szalai is in a stable condition in hospital after the assistant coach fell ill by the side of the pitch in the game’s early stages and was taken to hospital.

“Thank you for the many messages, I’m fine”, Szalai wrote on Facebook.

Netherlands defeated Hungary

Head coach Marco Rossi opted for his first-choice goalkeeper this autumn, Dénes Dibusz, in goal behind a three-man defence of Botond Balogh, Willi Orbán and Márton Dárdai. The long-favoured 3-4-3 formation featured Loic Nego on the right of midfield, Tamás Nikitscher and András Schafer in the centre and Zsolt Nagy on the left behind wide forwards Roland Sallai and Dominik Szoboszlai and central striker Barnabás Varga, mlsz.hu wrote.

Hungary were on the attack from the outset, but Sallai’s superb pass in the opening minute was rendered meaningless by the offside flag after he’d found Nego on the right corner of the six-yard box, then Schäfer drove the ball narrowly over the crossbar after Szoboszlai’s shot had been blocked. Moments later, just as a penalty was being awarded to the Netherlands for a Nikitscher handball, the game was stopped and lengthy treatment administered to Hungary’s assistant coach Ádám Szalai after he’d taken ill on the touchline.

The match was delayed by 14 minutes and on its resumption, striker Wout Weghorst put the home team ahead with a coolly-taken penalty straight down the middle of the goal. Hungary could have equalised almost immediately, but once left-winger Zsolt Nagy had crossed Nego’s left-footed, crossfield pass back across goal, Sallai could only head the ball within goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen’s grasp.

Ádám Szalai, “the heart of the team” got better

Dibusz then produced a fine finger-tip save to deny Tijjani Reijnders and more routine stops from Dumfries, Gakpo and Malen as Hungary battled to stay within sight of parity, but they succumbed again in the 11th minute of first-half added time, Zsolt Nagy’s foul on Malen in the Hungary penalty area handing Gakpo the chance to double his team’s lead from the spot, an opportunity he accepted with relish as sent Dibusz the wrong way and thumped his spotkick into the left side of the goal, halfway up.

Two-nil down at half-time was a daunting situation to be in for Hungary, especially as their fans no doubt remember with a shiver their last visit here in 2013 when the team lost 8-1, but the players battled on fearlessly, no doubt buoyed by news that their colleague Ádám Szalai’s condition had stabilised and he was being assessed in hospital.

Weghorst struck Hungary’s crossbar in the 50th minute with a sumptuous curling effort and Dibusz continued to impress in the Hungary goal as the Netherlands’ dominance continued, but a special strike in the 64th minute eventually extended the Euro 2024 semi-finalists’ lead, Dumfries’s thunderous volley giving Dibusz no chance. Youngst Levente Szabó entered the fray for his international debut on the hour mark before Dumfries then turned provider in the 86th minute, his cross headed into the Hungary net by substitute Teun Koopmeiners.

The latter almost doubled his goals tally in the match a minute later, only for his hooked shot to clip the crossbar on its way over, while at the other end, Willi Orbán also struck the crossbar in the remaining few minutes, as well as seeing an effort go wide of the target as Hungary sought a consolation goal. None was forthcoming though and thus the final score was set at 4-0.

This result ensures that Hungary will contest a Nations League play-off in March for the right to be in League A during the next edition of the Nations League in 2026, while the Netherlands will join group winners Germany in the quarter-final knockout stages of this current edition, the latter having set a Nations League record by defeating the group’s bottom team Bosnia 7-1 in the evening’s other match. Bosnia will be relegated to League B for next time. There’s still one round of group fixtures to play though, Hungary rounding off their campaign at home to Germany in Budapest’s Puskás Aréna on Tuesday evening.

Iconic Moments That Defined the Nation

The history of sports in Hungary is full of memorable events that will never be forgotten. The “Mighty Magyars” football team during the 1950’s is a perfect example; this team is seen as an icon which was able to change the manner in which association football was played. Their famous 6-3 win against England at Wembley in 1953 had an impact on Hungary and gave them so much pride because it showed that they could take on anyone. This period continued to motivate players and supporters, although there was a fall in the Hungarian football dominance due to changing politics.

The 1956 Olympics water polo clash between Hungary and the Soviet Union was not just any match. After the Hungarian Revolution, there was an event referred to as the “Blood in the Water” match which showed how the people could stand up to oppression. In this game, the Hungarian team triumphed. Such triumphs represent a nation’s unyielding courage and resolve, and they ignite patriotism.

Fostering Community and Unity

Sport plays a significant role in uniting communities across Hungary. Whether through amateur clubs, school tournaments, or local sports gatherings, sports bring people together and encourage social interaction. These activities create a shared sense of community, bridging generational and cultural divides. The popularity of team sports, particularly football and handball, instills a sense of camaraderie and collective purpose, with local teams forming the backbone of community spirit. National events like the Budapest Marathon and other athletic competitions offer citizens of all ages the opportunity to participate and celebrate the Hungarian identity through sports.

Investment in Youth Development

Recognizing the importance of nurturing future athletes, Hungary has made considerable investments in sports development. Training programs, improved facilities, and specialized schools for young athletes reflect a national commitment to excellence in sports. Programs focusing on youth talent in swimming, fencing, and track and field have produced a new generation of Hungarian athletes. By fostering young talent, Hungary not only secures a strong athletic future but also encourages young people to take pride in representing their nation.

The Enduring Hungarian Spirit

Hungarians view sports as a symbol of their national pride, strength and coming together. Hungary’s determination to be outstanding in sports is seen throughout its history of winning important games as well as investment in community sport programs. It is projected that even as athletes continue to bring glory internationally, sports shall forever be an influential tool for uniting people and honoring Hungarian resolve and strength.

Wheels of change: Hungary’s cycling culture and infrastructure evolution

bicycle bike Hungary's cycling

Sponsored content

Hungary is witnessing a cycling renaissance as more people embrace bicycles for commuting, leisure, and fitness. A blend of environmental awareness, health benefits, and the expansion of cycling infrastructure fuels this shift toward two-wheeled transportation. The evolution of cycling in Hungary represents a transformation in transportation habits and a shift toward sustainable living in urban and rural settings alike. Here, we delve into Hungary’s growing cycling culture, infrastructural advancements, and the challenges and opportunities ahead.

The Rise of Cycling Culture

Cycling has gained tremendous popularity in Hungary in recent years. The capital city of Budapest, in particular, has seen a marked increase in cyclists spurred by various government and local initiatives that promote biking as a sustainable and healthy alternative to motor vehicles. Many Hungarians choose bicycles for short commutes, leisure rides, and sporting activities, signaling a cultural shift toward eco-conscious mobility. This growth in cycling culture reflects a broader commitment to reducing pollution and easing traffic congestion, especially in Hungary’s urban centers.

The rise of cycling is also a community-driven movement, with cycling clubs and groups organizing rides and events that foster camaraderie among enthusiasts. These communities have been instrumental in normalizing cycling in daily life, creating a robust network of advocates passionate about promoting cycling’s benefits for personal well-being and the environment.

Infrastructure Development: Building a Cycling-Friendly Landscape

One key driver behind the cycling boom in Hungary is the significant improvement in infrastructure. Cities like Budapest have undergone extensive upgrades to accommodate the rising number of cyclists. Major roads and bridges now feature dedicated bike lanes, ensuring cyclists can navigate the city more safely and efficiently. Beyond Budapest, numerous bike paths are being developed to connect towns and rural areas, enabling cyclists to travel longer distances without needing motorized transportation.

These infrastructure developments extend to amenities that make cycling more convenient, including bike-friendly bridges, tunnels, and dedicated parking facilities. Many public spaces, shopping centers, and train stations now have ample bicycle parking, easing concerns about security and accessibility for cyclists. This network of facilities and pathways has laid the groundwork for a cycling revolution, making biking a more viable and attractive option for locals and tourists.

Health and Environmental Benefits of Cycling

Cycling offers many health benefits, from improved cardiovascular fitness and mental well-being to reduced stress levels. As Hungarians grow more health-conscious, many are choosing cycling as a form of exercise that promotes physical health and contributes to environmental sustainability. By reducing reliance on cars, cycling helps reduce air pollution and lowers greenhouse gas emissions, addressing some of the country’s pressing environmental challenges.

In cities like Budapest, where traffic congestion is expected, cycling also helps alleviate road traffic, leading to a more efficient urban environment. These health and environmental benefits are becoming key motivators for individuals and communities across Hungary, further boosting cycling’s popularity.

Fostering a Sense of Community and Cultural Impact

The growth of cycling in Hungary has brought a sense of community and shared identity among cyclists. Local clubs and organizations frequently host rides, tours, and races that unite people, cultivating a community spirit. This camaraderie has been instrumental in encouraging more people to embrace cycling, making it a social activity and a means of transportation. Many Hungarian cycling enthusiasts also enjoy sports-related hobbies like following international tournaments or engaging in bwin sports betting online to stay connected to the broader world of sports. These groups have also played a critical role in advocating for improved cycling infrastructure, promoting road safety, and lobbying for policy changes that support cyclists’ rights.

Cycling events and festivals have become regular features in Hungary’s cultural calendar, drawing participants from and abroad. This vibrant scene supports a healthier lifestyle, strengthens community bonds, and promotes a positive cultural shift toward sustainable living.

Challenges and Future Prospects: Paving the Way for Safer, Broader Access

Despite these positive strides, several challenges remain. Traffic safety is one of the primary concerns, particularly in busy urban areas where cyclists must often share the road with vehicles. To address these concerns, continued investment in safe, cyclist-friendly infrastructure is essential, as are educational campaigns to raise awareness about road safety among cyclists and drivers.

Expanding the cycling network to smaller towns and rural areas is another crucial step. While major cities like Budapest have made significant progress, extending these benefits to less urbanized areas will make cycling a more accessible and appealing choice for a more significant portion of the population. This expansion could also encourage long-distance cycling, fostering a biking culture for travel and leisure.

Looking forward, Hungary’s commitment to cycling infrastructure and promotion initiatives promises further growth in cycling participation. Continued investment in facilities, as well as community-led events and education programs, will be critical in maintaining momentum and addressing any challenges that may arise.

Conclusion: Hungary’s Path to a Cycling-Friendly Future

Hungary’s transformation into a cycling-friendly nation showcases the impact of focused infrastructure development, public awareness, and cultural engagement. As the country continues to expand and improve its cycling infrastructure, its commitment to fostering a healthier, greener society becomes evident. Cycling’s growing role as a primary mode of transportation reflects a shift toward sustainable urban living, making Hungary a model for countries worldwide seeking to reduce reliance on cars.

The wheels of change are turning, and Hungary is well on its way to becoming a leading destination for cycling enthusiasts. Through ongoing improvements and community engagement, Hungary is creating an environment where cycling is more than just a trend—it’s a lifestyle choice that aligns with a vision of a healthier, cleaner, and more connected future.

On Monday, Péter Szijjártó, the foreign affairs and trade minister, said that World Aquatics had inaugurated its temporary headquarters in Budapest after relocating from Lausanne. The governing body is set to move its entire global headquarters to the Hungarian capital by 2027.

In his speech at the inauguration ceremony, Szijjártó noted that a few years ago, the Hungarian government and World Aquatics signed an agreement that included establishing a global training and education center.

Szijjártó noted that the office inaugurated on Monday is temporary, and the World Aquatics Centre will be inaugurated next year. By 2026, he said, the entire global headquarters will be ready, and all aquatics-related activities will be managed from Budapest from 2027, according to a ministry statement.

The minister said it was an important goal to bring similar international organisations to Hungary, noting that with the relocation of World Aquatics, the country will host four sports federations.

He also underlined the importance of talent management, noting that the government is establishing a scholarship that will allow 200 athletes to study at Hungarian universities from 2027. Szijjártó said Hungary was proud that a Ugandan scholarship recipient has already qualified for the Olympics, adding that, hopefully, more young swimmers will take advantage of such opportunities.

Nations League: two new faces in Hungarian men’s squad for November double-header

mlsz rossi

Head coach Marco Rossi has called up two potential debutants for Hungary’s final Nations League group-stage matches against the Netherlands and Germany later this month.

Nations League – Hungary: two debutants

Ferencváros’s Zsombor Gruber and German Bundesliga II club Braunschweig’s Levente Szabó can make their international bows in Hungary’s next two fixtures after being selected by Rossi to join his latest 24-man squad in November, while two other notable names on the list are Milos Kerkez and Loic Nego, both of whom have recovered from injuries which kept them out of October’s two Nations League fixtures. Furthermore, Dániel Gera, a late call-up to last month’s squad, retains his place.

Hungary Men’s freshest squad (surnames first):

Goalkeepers:
Dibusz Dénes (Ferencvárosi TC)
Szappanos Péter (Al Fateh SC)
Tóth Balázs (Blackburn Rovers)

Defenders:
Balogh Botond (Parma)
Botka Endre (Ferencvárosi TC)
Dárdai Márton (Hertha BSC)
Fiola Attila (Újpest FC)
Orbán Willi (RB Leipzig)
Szűcs Kornél (Plymouth Argyle)

Midfielders:
Bolla Bendegúz (Rapid Wien)
Gera Dániel (DVTK)
Kata Mihály (MTK)
Kerkez Milos (Bournemouth)
Nagy Ádám (Spezia Calcio)
Nagy Zsolt (Puskás Akadémia)
Nego Loic (Le Havre AC)
Nikitscher Tamás (Kecskeméti TE)
Schäfer András (Union Berlin)

Forwards:
Csoboth Kevin (St. Gallen)
Gruber Zsombor (Ferencvárosi TC)
Sallai Roland (Galatasaray)
Szabó Levente (Braunschweig)
Szoboszlai Dominik (Liverpool)
Varga Barnabás (Ferencvárosi TC)

“Apart from among the forwards, there’s no change to the squad in terms of those players who earned spots last time, because Kerkez and Nego had originally been in that squad too”, Rossi explained to mlsz.hu.

“Everyone has been playing regularly, with the exception of (Endre) Botka, whom we’ve called up because he is a useful member of the squad in terms of his capabilities and, moreover, he has always performed well for the national team.”

“In place of Dániel Gazdag and Ádám Martin we’ve called up Zsombor Gruber and Levente Szabó, because in Gazdag’s case his league championship season, for which he was injured, has finished now. Martin is unfortunately not in the best form, but they could easily become squad members again in March.”

“Their absences give us an exceptional opportunity to assess Gruber and Szabó at close quarters. We’ve known and followed both for a long time, because they earlier caught our attention when at Puskás Akadémia and MOL Fehérvár respectively. Szabó has performed well and scored goals for Braunschweig, while Gruber doesn’t always play for Fradi, but performs well whenever called upon, as we could see against Debrecen at the weekend.”

Nation League: next two matches

The Hungarian men’s national squad will meet in Telki on 11th November, before taking to the pitch in Amsterdam on 16th November to face hosts the Netherlands. They’ll then return to Hungary to entertain Germany in the Puskás Aréna three days later.

“We know very well that we’ll face two teams which are among the world’s elite national teams”, Rossi continued.

“We know exactly how strong they are and we’re familiar with their strengths, but we’ll try to produce our best performance possible against them and we’d be glad if these would go alongside good results too. One can pay a heavy price for even the tiniest mistake against teams as strong as these, but despite this, we’d like to play with bravery against the Netherlands and Germany too”, Rossi concluded.

UEFA Nations League: Can Hungary beat Netherlands and Germany to Reach the Quarterfinals?

hungary football team

With the 2024 UEFA Nations League already underway, Hungary is hoping to make it to the League A quarterfinals after winning their last game against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Hungary is currently ranking third with five points and standing level with their biggest group 3 rival Netherlands, who rank second thanks to their goal difference. As such, Marco Rossi’s side hope to secure their spot in the next phase of the UEFA Nations League by beating the Netherlands on their turn after recording a home draw in their first-leg game.

While Hungary’s confidence will be bolstered by their last win against Bosnia, they will have an uphill task beating the Netherlands at their home ground. However, the Netherlands haven’t booked a win in their last three UEFA Nations League games after recording a draw against Germany and Hungary in their first-leg meetings and losing to Germany in the second leg. That seems like good news to Hungary, but they will also face the in-form Germany in their last group-stage match.

So can Hungary beat Netherlands and Germany to make it to the next stage or will this be the end of their 2024/2025 UEFA Nations League campaign? Here are match previews and betting predictions for these two games according to the football experts on SportyTrader.

Netherlands vs Hungary Match Preview (16th November)

Netherlands is set to welcome an in-form Hungary at the Johan Cruijff ArenaA in what promises to be a thrilling UEFA Nations League fixture as both teams hope to book the crucial three points. Both the Netherlands and Hungary have five points after four games, although the Dutch side has a slight advantage. However, the Netherlands started their campaign with an impressive 5-2 victory against Bosnia.

Hungary on the other hand had a rough start in their UEFA Nations League group stage campaign after losing 5-0 against Group 3 favorites Germany. They also struggled to bounce back in their second game after struggling to score against Bosnia but shared the spoils after a goalless. That was before holding back the Netherlands to a 1-1 draw in the third game and exerted their revenge against Bosnia with a 2-0 away win. That said, betting experts recommend betting on both teams to score since another draw might be on the books for this fixture.

Hungary vs Germany match preview (19th November)

While Hungary hopes they can at least secure a draw from this fixture to increase their chances of making it to the 2024/2025 UEFA Nations League quarterfinals, Germany is the outright favorite. The Germans have recorded a strong campaign this year and they will hope to finish the group stage unbeaten. Julian Nagelsmann’s side has proven to be a formidable opponent for any team in the Nations League, with their only coming against the Netherlands in their second game.

Hungary on the other side started their group stage campaign with a humiliating loss against the Germans and they will be seeking revenge when they welcome them to the Puskas Arena Park. However, considering how Marco Rossi’s side have struggled with their finishing to record goals, betting experts predict the Germans will overwhelm them once again. That will mean Hungary might not make it to the quarterfinals if the Netherlands manages to draw or win against them and beat Bosnia in their last match.

5 Reasons NBA Stars Are More Famous Than NFL Stars

michael jordan nba winning-shot-moment

Sponsored content

As the NFL is already going full swing and the NBA season is just around the corner, the dominance debate resumes, yet NBA stars shine brighter in fame than their NFL peers.

Curious why?

Here’s an inside look that explains the top five reasons behind the NBA’s star-studded spotlight. Let’s dive into this intriguing comparison!

1. Number of Players

When you break it down, the sheer volume of NFL players compared to NBA players makes a world of difference in terms of fame and recognition.

Just imagine trying to keep track of 1,696 names in the NFL versus merely 450 in the NBA. It’s almost like comparing a small village to a bustling city—far fewer faces to remember in the NBA, allowing the stars to be more easily recognized and celebrated.

Most NBA fans can rattle off the top players on their team because they see them regularly on the court. In contrast, NFL fans might struggle to recall all the starters on their favorite team, given the sheer mass of players filling multiple specialized roles.

Also, NFL players rotate in and out, especially non-marquee positions, so their chance to shine is limited. This discrepancy in player visibility and recognition is a substantial factor in why NBA stars tend to outshine their NFL counterparts in fame.

2. Career Length

When we take a closer look at the numbers, it becomes apparent that the NBA offers its players greater longevity in their careers compared to the NFL. The average NBA career spans about 4.8 years, whereas NFL players average around just 2.66 years, barely enough time to etch their mark in the league.

This difference of over two full seasons can be crucial for players looking to find their footing and make a name for themselves. Take, for instance, the notable contrast between Tom Brady and LeBron James.

Brady, defying odds, has played 23 seasons in the NFL at 47 years old. LeBron James, on the other hand, spent 21 seasons in the NBA while being considerably younger. This isn’t just true for stars; it applies to many players. Figures like JJ Redick or Paul Millsap have solidified long careers in the NBA, while NFL legends like LaDainian Tomlinson had significantly shorter tenures. The extended visibility naturally boosts NBA players’ popularity.

3. NBA Players Don’t Wear Helmets or Pads

Picture this: you’re watching an NBA game, and you see players sprinting up and down the court, dunking and shooting with every ounce of their passion on full display. Meanwhile, their faces are right there, unshielded, emotions visible and captivating. This direct visibility creates a unique bond between fans and their favorite players.

In contrast, when it comes to the NFL, things are a bit different. Players are layered with pads and helmets, reducing the chance to build that same level of facial recognition. Jerseys with numbers and positions are essential for fans to even begin identifying who’s who. It’s not just a barrier on the field—it’s a barrier to fame.

The openness of the NBA playing style allows fans to connect not just with players’ skills but with their expressions and identities, contributing significantly to why NBA stars tend to be more internationally recognizable and celebrated.

4. The NBA is a More Global League

When it comes to global reach, the NBA towers over the NFL in more ways than one. The top NBA stars like LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Steph Curry aren’t just household names in the United States but are widely recognized across continents, from Europe to Asia and beyond. Even a player slightly lower on the fame spectrum, like Kevin Love, is likely better known internationally than many top NFL stars. This global presence is largely due to basketball’s widespread popularity and the NBA’s strategic global marketing efforts.

While soccer undoubtedly takes the crown as the most international sport, basketball is steadily cementing its place in the hearts of fans worldwide.

According to ESPN’s World Fame 100 rankings, more NBA players appear in the top 100 most famous athletes than NFL players. When your league stars are embraced globally, the fame that follows naturally supports the narrative that NBA players often outshine their NFL counterparts in terms of international recognition.

The betting too! The whole world is betting on the NBA, while the NFL market is much smaller, especially outside of the US. While we’re at betting, check out the FanDuel NBA odds before the season starts!

5. In the NBA, Players are the Stars

In the world of basketball, the players are undoubtedly the central figures. Take LeBron James, for instance. His decision to switch teams was celebrated with an entire 30-minute special on ESPN titled “The Decision.” Such a spotlight showcases the significant role players have in controlling their narratives and, by extension, the league’s narrative.

This level of personal influence and autonomy simply doesn’t exist in the NFL, where strict regulations often limit players’ freedom to shape their public personas in such transformative ways. The NFL emphasizes the franchise over individual players, placing team loyalty and brand at the forefront.

However, in the NBA, cities don’t always define the teams—the stars do. Teams like the Cleveland Cavaliers and New Orleans Pelicans might have remained in the shadows internationally if not for players like LeBron James and Anthony Davis. Their power to attract global audiences highlights why NBA players are the true stars.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the NBA’s global reach and star-driven model set it apart in international recognition, positioning it ahead of the NFL on the global stage. While the NFL captivates American audiences with an unmatched fervor, the NBA’s strategy has secured its status as a global sports powerhouse.
