Commemoration event marking Hungary’s 1848-49 revolution and freedom fight in Edmonton

Washington, DC (MTI) – Árpád János Potápi, the state secretary for Hungarian communities abroad, attended a commemoration event marking Hungary’s 1848-49 revolution and freedom fight in Edmonton, where he emphasised the importance of diaspora communities.

In his speech at the commemoration, Potápi said the Hungarian government would continue to devote close attention to diaspora communities. One of the main ways the government helps Hungarian communities abroad is by supporting their local schools, he said, underlining the importance of churches and schools in the lives of communities.

He also said it was important to attract the interest of young people with Hungarian roots to Hungarian history and culture.

The event was also attended by Bálint Ódor, Hungary’s ambassador to Ottawa.

Before travelling to Edmonton, the state secretary visited Vancouver, where he spent the March 15 national holiday with the local Hungarian communities.
