Coronavirus – Hungary among countries with highest mortality rates in the world

In the autumn, during the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic, Hungary was in the midfield in Europe in terms of population mortality. However, this spring, the indicators show many problematic results. Based on the mortality data of the last few days, Hungary has the highest number of deaths caused by COVID-19.

According to the data of Johns Hopkins University that examined the situation in the European Union and the UK, during the second wave of the pandemic, Hungary was in the midfield in terms of the proportion of all coronavirus deaths registered since last February: 13th place, with 515.20 victims per million people.

However, during the third wave of the pandemic, Hungary has high numbers. As a result, it is no longer in the midfield but ranked as the third country with the highest population mortality rate. Currently, out of these 28 national European countries, only the Czech Republic and Belgium registered more coronavirus deaths than Hungary – reported by Telex.

Since mid-March, mortality numbers have become increasingly disappointing in Hungary.

As we reported on 17th March, the pandemic was forecasted to reach its most critical period, according to the Chief Medical Officer; and the prediction seems to have come true. On 23th March, Hungary recorded its highest ever daily COVID death toll; one day later, fatalities have risen to nearly 19,000 in Hungary, while today they have reached 19,224.
