Coronavirus – Taskforce proposes reducing school-leaving exams to written test

The government’s education taskforce has proposed simplifying secondary school final exams this year to comprise written tests only.

Normally the exams also involve an oral component.

The government will make a decision on the proposal next Wednesday, State Secretary Zoltán Maruzsa, the head of the body, told an online press conference on Thursday.

Final exams must meet the usual standards while the current epidemic must also be taken into account, he said.

Exams should be organised in such a way that students sit them in the shortest possible time and with the least personal contact. Students who do not plan to continue into higher education may take their secondary school exams at a later date, he proposed.

No more than ten students should take exams in the same classroom at any one time so that a distance of 1.5 metres can be maintained between them.

Exams are scheduled to start on May 4, he said.
