Croatia interior minister “cannot be taken seriously”, says Szijjarto
Budapest (MTI) – The words of an interior minister whose country’s immigration system collapsed within a single day “cannot be taken seriously,” Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said, responding to Croatian Interior Minister Ranko Ostojic’s remarks on Hungary’s handling of migrants.
The foreign ministry on Sunday said Ostojic had told Hungary “not to lecture Croatia on how to treat migrants” after having let nearly half a million migrants — some of whom they registered and some who they did not — pass through to the west.
Szijjarto noted that Hungary has received more than 210,000 illegal migrants since the beginning of the year, provided care for them and registered most of them as prescribed by EU rules.
He said the reason why “a small number” of migrants were not registered was that those migrants refused to cooperate with Hungarian authorities.
“Croatia on the other hand announced after one day that it is incapable of registering migrants, and abandoned cooperation with Europe,” Szijjarto said.
He asked Ostojic how Croatia could “fail the Schengen test within a day”.
