PHOTOS: The new twin towers of Budapest

Anybody who has visited Budapest recently could have seen the massive development projects all over the city. As the MOL tower already reigns over the skyline, it is time for another building to pop up. It will not be as tall as the MOL Campus, but it will be equally spectacular. The original plans included a “twist”, but that turned into “twins” as time passed.

Where Róbert Károly Boulevard crosses Váci Way, a new building will greet people coming up from the tube. In the thirteenth district, next to the police headquarters a new high-rise building will be built. It had an adventurous journey, but it seems like the final plans had been made. It will not be towering over the city, but it will be a very interesting addition to Budapest’s landscape.

From twist to twins

According to 24.hu, as the first high-rise building planned to be erected after the regime change, the new building was supposed to serve as an office building and a contemporary statue at the same time. The plan would have been a twisting building. The lower floors would have been paralleled with the Róbert Károly Boulevard, while the upper levels would have been paralleled with the Váci Way. This transition would have created a twist and the building would have been 90 metres tall. Since 2018, when the plans were first proposed, a lot has changed. As the initiative received many complaints, the towering twist was changed to a twin-tower design.

By 2020, the new designs were ready. The new building would have consisted of two 14 and 15-story tall towers connected at the bottom. The space between the two towers would have had terraces filled with vegetation for a more environmentally friendly look. The municipality had its own requirements which they communicated to the investor. They stressed that people should be able to cross the building underneath. So, the new design included a two-story arcade with restaurants, shops and conference rooms.

The final design

Since the initial drafts, the seemingly final design had already popped up and the construction may soon begin. If everything goes according to plan, the new building will be completed by 2024. At last, the design seems to be more lively and full of vegetation, a true futuristic project. Throughout the planning phase, the architects used up all that they had. The underground garage will be able to house 510 cars. The height of the building will be exactly at the 65 metres limit. While the greenspace index will be barely above 5 percent.
